Agartala: The Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College is preparing to launch its Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course in Gomati district. The initiative will provide students of Tripura an opportunity to pursue Ayurvedic medical education within the state.

The Health and Family Welfare Department, Tripura is developing the Chandrapur Integrated AYUSH Hospital as the temporary campus of the proposed medical college. The move will allow academic activities to begin before the construction of the permanent campus at Tepania.

Tripura Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Gitte inspected both locations on June 27. During the visit, he reviewed the ongoing preparation work and the proposed infrastructure plans.

Senior officials from different departments accompanied him during the inspection. The team included National Health Mission and National AYUSH Mission Mission Director Saju Wahid A, Health Director Dr Debashree Debbarma, PWD Chief Engineer Sanjay Das and other senior officials.

Chandrapur AYUSH Hospital Being Prepared as Temporary Campus

Kiran Gitte said the Chandrapur Integrated AYUSH Hospital will temporarily serve as the campus of the state’s first government Ayurvedic medical college.

The government is preparing separate classrooms, student hostels and other essential facilities at the location. Officials expect the temporary campus preparation work to finish within around 15 days.

The initial BAMS programme will admit 60 students. The state government has already started administrative preparations for operating the college.

This includes steps for appointing the principal and teaching staff. After the declaration of NEET-UG results, the admission process will follow national guidelines. The official admission notification will be released soon.

Students Can Study BAMS Within Tripura

Gitte said the new medical college will reduce the need for students to leave Tripura for Ayurvedic medical education.

“Students interested in Ayurveda will now get the opportunity to study at the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College itself,” he said.

The Health Secretary added that the state government is focusing on expanding AYUSH education. Along with Ayurvedic education, preparations are also underway to strengthen homeopathy education facilities in Tripura.

The government is working on a new homeopathic medical college at Amarpur Colony. This will create more opportunities for students seeking higher education in AYUSH disciplines, including BAMS and BHMS.

Tepania Selected for Permanent Ayurvedic Medical College Campus

The permanent campus of the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital will be developed at Tepania in Gomati district.

According to the Health Secretary, the project will involve an estimated investment of around Rs 70 crore. The campus will include modern academic buildings, a teaching hospital, student hostels, staff accommodation and research facilities.

The Health Department has already received the required land. Preparations for the construction phase are progressing.

The state government selected Tepania after reviewing multiple possible locations. The site was finalised following directions from Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.

Officials highlighted that the location has strategic advantages. The campus is close to a national highway, which will improve connectivity for students, teachers, doctors, patients and visitors.

Modern Infrastructure Planned Under AYUSH Expansion Project

The Public Works Department (PWD) Buildings Division, National AYUSH Mission and Health Department are jointly preparing the campus design.

The planned infrastructure includes:

  • Modern academic blocks
  • Teaching hospital facilities
  • Separate hostels for male and female students
  • Residential facilities for teachers and employees
  • Research and training centres

Gitte said the institution will gradually become a major centre for AYUSH education and healthcare services in Tripura and the Northeast region.

He also mentioned discussions with Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy regarding the project. The minister has directed officials to speed up implementation and improve the connecting road to the temporary campus.

Project Seen as Major Step for Tripura Healthcare Education

The Health Secretary said the project has moved forward due to the vision of the state government and support from the Government of India.

The upcoming Ayurvedic medical college is expected to strengthen healthcare education in Tripura. It will also create new opportunities for students who want to build careers in Ayurveda.

The government has given priority to completing the project within the planned timeline. Different departments are coordinating to begin construction work and develop the institution as a key AYUSH education centre in Northeast India.
