Activists of ABVP and D.El.Ed students lodged an FIR against two Police officers – SDPO Ramesh Yadav and Inspector Sumanta Bhattacharjee – in West PS on Thursday over the incidence of lathi-charge by Police personnel during a ‘peaceful’ demonstration at Shikhsha Bhavan on Tuesday. According to ABVP sources, around 25 students were injured in the unprovoked lathi charge.
On September 7, ABVP and D.El.Ed students held a demonstration in front of the Shikhsha Bhavan demanding conducting online examinations for the D.El.Ed students instead of offline exams.
After a prolonged demonstration, Police asked the agitators to vacate the place. Soon, after Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the students. The ABVP leaders vented anger at the SDPO Ramesh Yadav and Inspector Sumanta Bhattacharjee and blamed them for the lathi charge.
Speaking to the media, ABVP Tripura Pradesh Secretary Pritam Pal said, “On September 7 last, Police resorted to lathi-charge on us – even female students were also not spared. Condemning the Police action, we are filing a complaint today against SDPO, Sadar Ramesh Yadav and Inspector Sumanta Bhattacharjee who led the lathi-charge”.
In this connection, Pal also said, ABVP held a protest programme in Agartala on Wednesday in which protestors raised the demand for action against concerned Police Officers as well as Director of Higher Education NC Sharma and Education department Secretary Soumya Gupta.
Meanwhile, ABVP activists and D.El.Ed students hit streets in Dharmanagar protesting against Police action as well as demanding action against the Director of Higher Education and the Secretary of Education department. The agitating students wanted to submit a memorandum to DM, North Nagesh Kumar. However, after the DM did not give them an appointment, the agitators gheraoed the DM Office premises and started a sit-in demo.
Later, the DM met the agitating student. During the submission of the memorandum, ABVP condemned SDPO Ramesh Yadav for his alleged role in lathi-charge. They also demanded suspension of the Director of Higher Education and Secretary of the Education Department.
