CPM Tripura State Committee Secretary and party’s Central Committee member Gautam Das is no more. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday morning. Das was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife, daughter and relatives.

According to social media post by the party, mortal remains would reach Agartala today evening will be kept at the Party office tonight so that well wishers can offer tributes. He will be cremated tomorrow afternoon.  

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressed heartfelt condolence at the death of Das. In a social media post, Deb wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of CPM State secretary Gautam Das. May his soul rest in peace. I pray to the God to give the bereaved family members and well wishers the strength to endure the loss”.

CPM State Secretariat expressed profound grief at his demise and extended sympathy to the wife and daughter of the deceased leader.

Politburo member and Opposition leader, Manik Sarkar offered respect to the deceased leader. Sarkar also extended compassion to the wife, daughter and relatives.  

Besides, leaders of other political parties also condoled the death of Das.

Gautam Das tested Covid positive on August 25 last and was admitted at a private hospital in Agartala. However, as his infection in lungs could not be controlled, Das was taken to Kolkata for better treatment. However, he passed away today morning.

In a press release, CPM State Committee mentioned, Gautam Das was born in Chittagong under erstwhile East (at present Bangladesh). After completing school education from the Netaji School in Agartala, he was enrolled at MBB College for graduation. During his college days, Das got involved in students’ politics. In 1968, he became a party member. He was the founder editor of party’s daily mouthpiece Daily Desher Katha and founder member of the Agartala Press club.

Incumbent secretary of the Agartala Press Club also expressed condolences at his demise.

After becoming a member of the State Committee in 1986, he eventually became a member of party’s Central Committee in 2015.
