Amidst the border row between Assam and Mizoram, a group of people of Assam has threatened to block the Assam-Agartala road from Monday early morning protesting against sending essential commodities loaded trucks to Mizoram via Damchhara of North Tripura and Kanmoon District of Mizoram.

Locals of Karimganj and adjoining areas in Assam submitted a memorandum and wrote letters to the Police Superintendent of Karimganj District, OC of Bazarichhara Police Station, Assam Churaibari PS and Chief Minister of Assam raising the issue.

One of the local agitators, Joy Deb said, “We have a friendly relation with the people of Tripura”.

Pointing out the friendly gesture of the Assam administration and local people, Joy Deb also said that several Chorei people from Tripura took refuge to Assam after an alleged Bru aggression near Kaskau Bru relief camp at Damchhara on July 26 last.

He said, Assam Government, including the local MLA and administration, extended help to the helpless Chorei people of Tripura. However, Tripura Government has decided to extend help to Mizoram, Deb lamented.

People of Assam have raised voice against the ‘Mizo aggression’, cutting across the Political affiliation, Deb said and added, “in protest against the killing of our jawans, administration of Assam stopped vehicular movement carrying essential commodities to Mizoram through Medlichhara area under Karimganj”.

Deb continued and said, “Assam has created an economic blockade against Mizoram, but Tripura Government and North District Administration led by DM Nagesh Kumar are allowing hundreds of trucks loaded with essential items to move to Mizoram via Damchhara”.

He continued and said, “We are protesting the decision of the Tripura Government to extend help to Mizoram and urged the concerned authorities of Assam to look into the matter. If Tripura Government does not stop extending help to Mizoram, we will have to block the 8 Assam-Agartala National Highway at Lowairpoa from tomorrow.”

Deb also pointed out, “A blockade on Assam-Agartala Road may lead to crisis of essentials in Tripura also. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb needs to ponder over this aspect”.
