People residing in Udaipur Municipal Corporation (UMC) in Tripura are reportedly reeling under water crisis for around last six months. Under the UMC, Ward no 6, 7, 8, 9 20 and 21 are the worst affected areas. It is learnt, the crisis is mainly due to faulty pump machine.
Local people said, during the initial period of the crisis, UMC supplied water through tankers – however, tanker services are no longer available for reasons best known to the UMC authority.
“We are paying a water tax of Rs 40 per month – however, we are deprived of water supply. The UMC is least concerned about our plights even as we are suffering water crisis for the last six months. Ironically, UMC is yet to wake up from slumber despite repeated pleas” , residents of Ward no 8 alleged.
DWS sources said, water supply services have been affected due to technical faults of pump machines. It is learnt that UMC had taken initiative to install new pump machine – but nothing concrete happened so far, sources alleged.
“Technical problem in pump machine is no doubt, a major issue causing the water crisis. At the same time, water ‘theft’ using high power motor by a section of people is another big worry for people,” local people alleged and added, several household connect high power motor pumps with water supply line to bring more water illegally into the household. The menace of such water theft was rampant during the previous left reign and the problem is still continuing in BJP-IPFT rule. No action against people involved in water ‘theft’ was taken, locals of ward no 9 alleged.
While the society is fighting a grim battle against Covid19, water crisis has further complicated woes of people. Collecting water has become risky due to threat of Covid19 transmission. In view of the present situation, it will be imperative for the concerned department to take effective steps for mitigating our water woes, said a retired school teacher.
