September 26, 2017: The State Government today announced formation SIT to probe into murder of reporter Shantanu Bhowmik and declared decision to provide Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance to bereaved family members.
“The Council of Ministers of the State has agreed to form SIT for speedy trial of murder case of Shantanu Bhowmik. Moreover, the State cabinet announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for Shantanu Bhowmik’s family”, State Finance and ICA Minister Bhanu Lal Saha stated this today after Cabinet meeting.
Notably, Shantanu Bhowmik was brutally murdered by miscreants on September 20 while he was covering a clash between CPIM and IPFT at Mandai in West District.
On September 24 last, a delegation of Agartala Press Club called on the Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and demanded formation of SIT. Sarkar assured the delegation that he would be looking into the matter and try to address the demand for SIT formation.
Meanwhile, member of Press Council of India (PCI) Krishna Prasad today reached Agartala to inquire about murder of Shantanu. He will be staying in Agartala till September 29 and will meet slain reporter’s family members, members of Journalists’ organizations and Police. Led by senior journalists of several journalists’ organizations, a group of reporters of print and electronic media today visited Mandai and paid floral tribute to slain Shantanu Bhowmik. Members of the visiting Journalists’ Organizations today once again demanded CBI inquiry turning down State Government’s decision to form SIT to probe into the murder.
