Tributes Flow for Assam Tribune Chief P G Baruah
New Delhi/Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conveyed profound sorrow over the death of P G Baruah, Editor and Managing Director of The Assam Tribune Group, describing his passing as a significant setback for journalism and public life in Northeast India.
Chairman Emeritus and Editor of The Assam Tribune, Prafulla Govinda Baruah, breathed his last in a private hospital in Guwahati due to old-age ailments at 9.30 pm on December 14.
Several eminent persons and political leaders including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma expressed profound grief at the passing away of P.G. Baruah.

Paying tributes leaders said, his lifelong dedication to principled journalism and his immense contribution to literature, education and public life will always be cherished.
Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened by Baruah’s demise and noted that the veteran media personality would be remembered for his outstanding and lifelong contribution to the field of journalism.
PM Modi underscored that P.G. Baruah remained passionately committed to Assam’s development and played an instrumental role in bringing the state’s vibrant culture and heritage to national prominence.
Expressing his condolences, the Prime Minister said his thoughts were with the bereaved family and admirers, and offered prayers for the departed soul.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed grief on X, paying homage to Baruah’s enduring legacy in nurturing credible and responsible journalism in the state.
CM Sarma said that P G Baruah was far more than a media professional, describing him as an institution whose visionary leadership transformed The Assam Tribune into one of the most respected and influential newspapers in the region.
He noted that Baruah consistently upheld the highest principles of journalistic ethics and public accountability, particularly during periods of rapid transition within the media industry.
The Chief Minister further said Baruah’s dedication to Assam extended well beyond newsroom boundaries, as he regularly used the newspaper as a platform to spotlight development challenges, social issues and the preservation of cultural identity.
According to Sarma, Baruah’s efforts to safeguard and promote Assamese culture through journalism would continue to inspire generations of writers, journalists and intellectuals.
P.G. Baruah led The Assam Tribune Group as its head and publisher of The Assam Tribune and Dainik Asom, guiding the organisation through decades marked by political change, social evolution and technological advancement.

Under his leadership, the media group earned widespread recognition for its independent editorial voice and balanced, credible reporting.
Condolences also poured in from leaders across political parties, media houses and civil society, who remembered P G Baruah as a towering and transformative figure in Northeast India’s media landscape.
