Evidence of racial abuse not found, so far: Dehradun Police on Angel killing case

Agartala, Dec 30: The Dehradun Police on Tuesday stated that their investigation into the death of Tripura student Angel Chakma has not revealed any evidence suggesting racial abuse or hate crime. In a Facebook Post, Dehradun Police mentioned, “#Selaqui_Assault_Case: Prima Facie No Evidence of Racial Violence”.

After a physical altercation between two groups of youths in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, Angel Chakma—a resident of Tripura who was injured in the incident—passed away during treatment on 26-12-2025, the post read.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said the police were aware of social media claims alleging racial motivation behind the incident. However, he clarified that the inquiry conducted so far has not established any proof of racial discrimination or targeted violence.

The social media post read, “Police have noticed social media posts linking the incident to racial discrimination. However, the investigation conducted so far has not revealed any evidence of racial discrimination or violence. From the day of the incident (9 December 2025) until 26 December, no racial abuse or violence was reported by anyone in interactions with the police or media.

Moreover, no such allegation appears in the FIR filed in the matter.

Tribuneindia.com reported: The SSP further stated that statements from local residents have been recorded and various forms of digital evidence, including CCTV footage, have been seized. He reiterated that no material has emerged so far indicating the use of racial slurs by any of the accused during the incident.

Explaining the sequence of events, Singh said the incident took place in the Selaqui area during a birthday celebration hosted by one of the accused, Suraj Khwas, who hails from Manipur. Two groups — one comprising Angel Chakma and his brother, and the other consisting of six individuals — reportedly became involved in a verbal altercation that soon turned violent.

According to the police, casual remarks exchanged among the party attendees were perceived as offensive by Angel’s side, triggering an argument. The disagreement escalated into a physical clash, during which both Angel Chakma and his brother Michael Chakma sustained injuries. Angel later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, having suffered critical injuries to his neck and spine.

The SSP further stated that statements from local residents have been recorded and various forms of digital evidence, including CCTV footage, have been seized.

He reiterated that no material has emerged so far indicating the use of racial slurs by any of the accused during the incident.

Assuring fairness in the process, Singh said the investigation is being conducted transparently and in accordance with the law, and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings, Tribuneindia.com reported.
