Bangladeshi Tribal Woman Held with Fake Notes in Amarpur

Amarpur (Tripura) Jan 4: State Police of Amarpur–Birganj PS arrested a Bangladeshi tribal woman along with counterfeit Indian currency notes worth Rs 1.5 lakh. Police also detained two local youths in connection with the case, officials said on Sunday.

The arrested woman has been identified as Pranita Tripura (35), a resident of the Laugang area under Panchhari Police Station in Khagrachhari district of Bangladesh.

Police said she had illegally entered India through the Chaplingchhari border area under Karbook subdivision of Gomati district on Saturday.

Acting on a specific intelligence input, police laid a trap at Dalak Bazar.

Officer-in-Charge of Birganj Police Station Sukramani Debbarma, along with Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nirmal Das and a large police contingent, conducted the operation.

At around 1 am, police intercepted an auto-rickshaw bearing registration number TR03C3368 and carried out a search.

During the operation, the Bangladeshi woman was apprehended along with two local youths identified as Bir Chandra Jamatia (31) of Amarpur Gamaku and Prabhat Hari Jamatia (40) of Amarpur Duluma.

Fake Indian currency notes amounting to Rs1.5 lakh were recovered from their possession.

During interrogation, the accused woman reportedly confessed to her involvement in the racket and revealed details of the operation, police said.

A case has been registered at Birganj Police Station (Case No. 02/2026). On Sunday, all three accused were produced before the court, which remanded them to judicial custody till January 13.

The incident has caused a stir in Amarpur and has once again raised concerns over illegal cross-border movement and smuggling activities, highlighting issues related to border surveillance amid the prevailing instability in neighbouring Bangladesh, police added.
