9th Ranglong Khohui Opens with Lights and Tradition in Panisagar
Dharmanagar, Jan 21: Panisagar in North Tripura came alive in a wave of joy, colour and celebration as the three-day long 9th Ranglong Khohui started on Tuesday (Jan 20). It is one of the most cherished social festivals of the Ranglong community (Halam), was inaugurated at Indurail ground in North Tripura’s Panisagar subdivision. The vibrant three-day festival began around 8 pm, transforming the entire area into a hub of festive enthusiasm and cultural pride.
Rhythmic chime of traditional bells and the release of glowing, colourful sky lanterns that illuminated the night sky, symbolising prosperity and goodwill marked the opening ceremony. Following age-old Ranglong customs, East Tripura Lok Sabha MP Kriti Devi Debbarman formally inaugurated the festival.

Besides, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma attended as a special guest, alongside noted personalities including Bhaba Ranjan Reang, Kamal Kalai and Ralongmaring Halam, as well as several prominent tribal leaders and social workers.
Addressing the gathering, MP Kriti Devi Debbarman described the festival as a proud reflection of indigenous heritage. She said the traditional bell-ringing and sky lanterns beautifully showcased the richness and dignity of Ranglong culture.
Addressing the gathering, Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Debbarma remarked, “Our culture and traditions define our identity. The ninth year of this festival shows how carefully we are preserving our roots.” He further stressed that challenges cannot be resolved without unity and urged people to remain vigilant in protecting the interests of the indigenous population.
The Indurail ground witnessed a sea of people as locals and visitors soaked in the festive mood. Colourful stalls displaying indigenous handicrafts, traditional attire and a wide variety of local delicacies added to the carnival-like atmosphere, drawing enthusiastic crowds throughout the evening.
To ensure smooth and peaceful celebrations, the local administration has deployed tight security arrangements. According to the organising committee, the festive fervour of ‘Ranglong Khohui’ will continue over the next two days with lively cultural performances and a range of competitions, promising more colour, music and merriment for all.

According to the schedule, Traditional Games and Outdoor Programmes were the main attraction along with other programmes including songs and dances. Organizers informed the media that a total of 11 traditional games will be held during the festival. The final round will be held on Thursday.
