Factional Clash in BJP: Ex-BJP Mandal president assaulted, takes shelter at Police Station
Charilam (Tripura) Feb 12: A former BJP Mandal president of ruling BJP in Charilam was allegedly assaulted by members of his own party members following a heated clash between two local factions over the distribution of work orders at the RD office on Thursday.
The injured leader, Rajkumar Debnath, who previously served as the Charilam Mandal president, reportedly came under attack during a fierce altercation between the rival groups.
The dispute is said to have erupted over the allocation of work orders, intensifying an already long-standing factional rivalry within the local unit of the party.
Following the assault, Debnath, in an injured condition, rushed to Bishramganj Police Station to seek protection. From there, he was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
Sources said that internal conflicts between the two local groups have been continuing for a considerable period, allegedly linked to business interests and related activities.
Despite repeated appeals from top party leaders, including Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, to end factional infighting at the grassroots level, tensions have reportedly persisted.
In connection with Wednesday’s incident, Debnath lodged a formal complaint at Bishramganj Police Station, naming three individuals allegedly involved in the attack.
Expressing resentment against the present Mandal leadership, Debnath said, “Despite being a former Mandal president and a Panchayat Samiti member, I have been attacked. No one is safe in Charilam.”
The incident has triggered widespread concern in the locality. Police officials confirmed that a complaint has been received and an investigation is currently underway.
