Local Breed Dogs Rescued from Chakmaghat, ‘Smuggling’ Bid Foiled
Agartala, Feb 24: A suspected dog smuggling attempt was foiled in Tripura’s Khowai district after at least four local-breed dogs were rescued from sacks in a forested area of Chakmaghat under Mungiakami Police Station on Tuesday morning.
According to police sources, the animals were allegedly packed into sacks under the cover of darkness and abandoned in the Champlai area, reportedly with the intention of smuggling them out. The incident came to light after vigilant local residents spotted the suspicious sacks and alerted the police.
Acting swiftly, a team from Mungiakami Police Station reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The dogs were later handed over to “Posham”, a dog welfare organisation based in Agartala, which shifted the rescued animals to a safe shelter for care and rehabilitation.
The incident has reignited concerns over the alleged resurgence of dog smuggling activities in parts of the state. Local residents claimed that the illegal trade has been active in the region for some time and demanded intensified surveillance and strict enforcement measures.

Names of a few local individuals have reportedly surfaced in connection with the case, though police have not officially confirmed any arrests so far. An investigation is underway to identify those involved and to determine the intended destination of the animals.
The episode has sparked public outrage, with animal welfare advocates calling for stringent action against perpetrators to curb the growing menace of illegal dog trafficking in Tripura.
