Gomati First in Tripura to Launch Solar Plant at DM Office

Agartala, February 27: In a significant step toward solar-powered governance, Gomati district has become the first in Tripura to commission a rooftop solar power plant at a District Magistrate’s office under the state’s “Solar Sankalp” initiative.

The 15-kilowatt grid-connected rooftop solar facility was inaugurated in Udaipur by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik on Friday afternoon. The project marks the formal beginning of Tripura’s plan to solarise administrative buildings across all districts.

The solar installation has been set up at the Gomati District Magistrate’s office and is designed to meet a substantial portion of the office’s daytime electricity needs through renewable energy. Any surplus power generated will be exported to the grid under the net metering mechanism.

Officials said the initiative is being implemented in accordance with guidelines issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and is being executed by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, the state’s power utility.

Addressing the gathering, Shripad Naik emphasized that integrating government offices into the renewable energy network represents a structural shift toward environmentally responsible administration. He noted that solarisation of public infrastructure reflects the Centre’s broader commitment to expanding clean energy adoption at the grassroots level.

State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath pointed out that enabling government offices to produce their own electricity would substantially lower recurring power expenses while also supporting environmental conservation. He noted that the programme underscores the state’s dedication to sustainable energy planning and responsible financial management.

The Minister also encouraged residents to join the clean energy drive by installing rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. He said that households adopting the scheme could potentially eliminate their electricity bills and earn additional income by supplying surplus electricity to the grid through net metering. According to him, rooftops can evolve into future-ready power generation hubs.

Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather, senior officials of TSECL, engineers, and representatives associated with the project were present during the inauguration ceremony.

With Gomati taking the lead, TSECL sources revealed that rooftop solar installations totaling 304 kilowatts will be set up across eight District Magistrate offices in Tripura, with an estimated investment of ₹2.43 crore.

In addition to the 15-kilowatt system in Gomati, proposed capacities include 49 kilowatts in Sepahijala, 35 kilowatts in South Tripura, 90 kilowatts in North Tripura, 15 kilowatts in Khowai, 22 kilowatts in Unakoti, 25 kilowatts in Dhalai, and 53 kilowatts in West Tripura.
