Agartala March 19: The BJP has announced its candidate for the Dharmanagar by election. Jahar Chakraborti will contest the seat as the BJP nominee.

Earlier, the Left Front named Amitabha Datta as its candidate for the by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in Tripura.

The Dharmanagar Assembly seat fell vacant after the death of former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen on December 26, 2026.

The by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency in Tripura will be held on April 9.

The results will be declared on May 4. The schedule was announced on Sunday by the Election Commission of India on March 15.

BJP confident of Dharmanagar By-Election win: CM

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday expressed confidence that the BJP will secure victory in the Dharmanagar by-election scheduled for April 9.

He stated that the party’s central leadership selected Jwahar Chakraborty as the candidate. According to him, Chakraborti has been associated with the BJP for a long time and is known for his courteous nature.

Recalling his earlier visits, Dr. Saha said that during party work in Dharmanagar, he often travelled with Chakraborti on his motorcycle.

He added that Chakraborti’s family has deep roots in the BJP. Moreover, he noted that Chakraborti enjoys strong recognition among local voters, which the party sees as a key advantage.

Expressing optimism, the Chief Minister said the BJP remains confident of winning the seat and ruled out any uncertainty over the outcome.

The Chief Minister further added that the party approaches every election with seriousness. He said the BJP is now awaiting the completion of the Assembly process, after which its full-scale political activities will begin.
