Behliangchhip (Tripura), Mar 24: The misty heights of Jampui Hills echoed with cheers today as the annual Junior YMA Football Tournament officially kicked off at the Behliangchhip playground.
More than just a local sports meet, the event represents a vital community lifeline for the Mizo highlands of North Tripura, channeling the energy of youth from ten different villages into the discipline of the “beautiful game.”
Organized by the Sports Sub-committee of the Tripura Group Young Mizo Association (YMA), the week-long festival serves as a stage for the region’s next generation of athletes.
This year’s edition carries significant weight as it is held under the banner of the Zosanglura Memorial Trophy.
The tournament honors the legacy of Zosanglura, the founding president of the Tripura Group YMA. His lifelong mission was the socio-cultural upliftment of the Jampui community.
Structured for Inclusivity
To ensure a level playing field and maximize participation, the organizers have divided the competition into three age-based tiers:
- Team I: Senior Group
- Team II: Intermediate Group
- Team III: Junior Group
The opening day saw a massive turnout, with the Behliangchhip stands packed with parents and local residents.
The atmosphere was less like a standard tournament and more like a community carnival, as families from across the hills gathered to cheer for the budding stars of their respective villages.
Beyond the Pitch: Mental Wellness and Discipline
Laltlinpuia Pachuau, Secretary of the Sports Sub-committee, highlighted that the goals of the YMA extend far beyond the final whistle.
According to Pachuau, the tournament is a strategic intervention designed to identify talent early while shielding the youth from modern social rungs.
“Our aim is to promote sports as a primary tool for mental wellness,” Pachuau stated.
“By keeping children engaged in constructive, high-energy activities like football, we are actively steering them away from harmful habits and substance abuse.”
The organizers believe that the discipline required on the field—teamwork, resilience, and tactical focus—directly translates to better academic performance and future career readiness for the participants.
News Analysis: The YMA’s Role in Tripura’s Social Fabric
The Young Mizo Association (YMA) has historically acted as the backbone of social administration in the Jampui Hills.

In a region where geographical isolation from the state capital, Agartala, can sometimes limit access to large-scale sports infrastructure, the YMA’s “grassroots-first” approach fills a critical gap.
By naming this year’s trophy after Zosanglura, the association reinforces the “Mizo identity” of service and community excellence, ensuring that the founding principles of the Tripura Group YMA are passed down to the “Gen-Alpha” players currently taking the field.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on March 28, 2026, promising five days of intense competition and community bonding.
