Agartala April 2: Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has signaled a return to hardline regionalism.

Addressing a gathering on Wednesday, his first since the announcement of TMP Candidates for the TTAADC election —Debbarma called for a mass movement strategy centered on the slogan “Chini Ha Chini Sasan” (Our Land, Our Rule).

The movement would be launched within next 18 months, he said.

The royal-scion-turned-politician took a sharp aim at the ruling BJP, demanding “delivery over assurances.”

Specifically addressing Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s stance on the Tiprasa Accord, Debbarma insisted that the state government must demonstrate completed work on the ground before seeking the indigenous community’s mandate.

Return of ‘Greater Tipraland’ demand

The highlight of the rally, however, was the ‘Greater Tipraland’ rhetoric which includes parts of Bangladesh and parts of Assam and other States.

Moving beyond the state’s borders, Debbarma suggested that historical links could eventually see regions like Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, and Khagrachari—currently in Bangladesh—integrated marerializing Greater Tipraland vision.

He argued that gaining a foothold in these areas, particularly the Chittagong port region, is the only way to ensure the economic self-sufficiency of the Tiprasa people and end the cycle of “begging for funds” from the Centre.

News Analysis: The Shift from Governance to Resistance

Debbarma’s latest stance marks a significant departure from the diplomatic maneuvering seen during the signing of the tripartite agreement in early 2024.

As his future course of action focuses on mass movement, it seems he is re-aligning TMP as a “resistance movement” before the next Assembly elections in the State.

This shift appears to be a strategic response to internal party friction apparent ahead of the TTAADC polls.

By doubling down on the “Greater Tipraland” sentiment, Debbarma is attempting to consolidate his core “Thansa” (unity) vote bank, betting that ethnic identity remains a more powerful motivator than the “money, liquor, and sops” he alleges his rivals are using.

Rejecting ‘Alliance’ for Principles

Commenting on collapse of alliance talks with the BJP, Debbarma said, “I will not sacrifice the future of our youth for the personal power of a few individuals”.

He urged the electorate to prioritize long-term infrastructure and job security over immediate election-season inducements.

With the future movement roadmap is now under active consideration, the TMP’s role will be tested as it navigates a volatile geopolitical narrative that seeks to redefine not just Tripura’s borders, but its entire economic identity.
