KMC Begins Investigation Into 17 Properties
Kolkata/Agartala: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has reportedly initiated an investigation into multiple properties allegedly linked to senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. The civic authority issued notices to 17 properties located within Kolkata Municipal Corporation limits.
Officials served the notices under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act, 1980. The provision allows civic authorities to seek clarification from owners in cases involving suspected unauthorized constructions.
According to reports, municipal officials pasted copies of the notices outside several identified buildings. The development has triggered fresh political debate in West Bengal.
Two South Kolkata Properties Under Scanner
Among the properties facing scrutiny are two residential premises associated with the Diamond Harbour MP. One property is located at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, while the other stands at 121 Kalighat Road in south Kolkata.
The Harish Mukherjee Road notice was reportedly issued to Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, a company believed to have links with the Banerjee family. Meanwhile, the Kalighat Road notice was addressed to Lata Banerjee, mother of Abhishek Banerjee.
Interestingly, both locations lie close to the Kalighat residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
However, the ruling All India Trinamool Congress had not issued any official response till the filing of this report.
Political Allegations Intensify in West Bengal
The issue of properties allegedly linked to members of the Banerjee family has surfaced repeatedly over the years. Opposition parties, including the CPI(M), Congress, and BJP, have often accused the ruling Trinamool Congress leadership of acquiring properties through family-linked entities.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected such allegations. She described them as politically motivated attempts aimed at defaming her family and party leadership.
The latest controversy gained momentum after comments made by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari during a public gathering at Falta in South 24 Parganas district last week.
During the meeting, Adhikari hinted at possible investigations into properties allegedly connected to a company linked with Abhishek Banerjee. Although he avoided directly naming the Trinamool Congress MP, he repeatedly referred to him as “Mr Nephew.”
Adhikari also claimed that he had collected details of 24 properties associated with a company allegedly connected to the leader from KMC records.
Fresh Statements Add Political Heat
On Monday, Suvendu Adhikari once again attacked the previous Trinamool Congress administration. He stated that the present government remains determined to initiate legal action against individuals allegedly involved in corruption and misuse of public funds.
The remarks further escalated political tensions in the state. Political observers believe the issue may become a major point of confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP ahead of future electoral battles in West Bengal.
At the same time, civic authorities have maintained that the notices are part of a legal municipal process under existing regulations.

Why Section 400(1) Matters
Section 400(1) of the KMC Act empowers municipal authorities to examine allegations of illegal or unauthorized construction.

Property owners receive an opportunity to appear before civic officials and submit explanations or supporting documents.
Municipal authorities can take further legal steps if violations are confirmed after the hearing process.
