Agartala/Kolkata: The BJP registered a massive victory in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal today.

However, the unexpected rise of the CPIM emerged as the biggest talking point. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda won by over 1.09 lakh votes, while the Left secured a surprising second position much ahead of Congress and Trinamool Congress.

BJP Secures Comfortable Victory in Falta

The Bharatiya Janata Party achieved a decisive win in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal. The result was announced after the completion of counting on Sunday. BJP nominee Debangshu Panda secured 1,49,666 votes and defeated all rivals by a huge margin.

Political analysts had predicted a BJP victory after the Election Commission ordered a repoll in the constituency. Allegations of irregularities during the first round of polling had already weakened the image of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the area.

However, despite the BJP’s dominant performance, the main discussion after the result centered on the unexpected performance of the CPIM.

CPIM’s Vote Share Becomes the Biggest Surprise

The Left party’s revival in Falta surprised many political observers. CPIM candidate Sambhunath Kurmi secured 40,645 votes and finished second.

The constituency had not witnessed a strong Left presence in recent years. Therefore, the CPIM’s sudden rise triggered speculation about changing political equations in West Bengal.

Many analysts believe anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool voters consolidated behind the Left candidate during the repoll. Others pointed out that voter dissatisfaction with the ruling party may have encouraged traditional Left supporters to return to the CPIM.

The result pushed the Congress to third position and reduced the Trinamool Congress to fourth place.

Trinamool Congress Faces Historic Setback

Congress candidate Abdur Razzak secured 10,084 votes. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan managed only 7,783 votes.

The result marked a major embarrassment for the ruling party led by Mamata Banerjee.

For the first time since the formation of the Trinamool Congress in 1998, the party’s candidate finished fourth in an election contest. In addition, both Congress and Trinamool Congress candidates lost their security deposits.

Political experts described the outcome as a warning sign for the ruling party ahead of future electoral battles in the state.

Falta Repoll Ordered After Electoral Complaints

The Election Commission conducted the repoll on May 21 after receiving multiple complaints regarding the original polling held on April 29.

Opposition parties alleged large-scale electoral misconduct during the first phase of voting. Reports claimed that EVM buttons assigned to BJP candidates were covered with white tape at several polling stations.

Several voters also alleged that supporters linked to the Trinamool Congress prevented them from casting votes.

Following these complaints, special poll observer Subrata Gupta visited the constituency and carried out an inquiry. Based on his findings, the Election Commission of India ordered a complete repoll in Falta.

Falta Result Contrasts Sharply With Previous Elections

The latest verdict differs sharply from earlier election outcomes in the constituency.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, Trinamool Congress leader Shankar Kumar Nashkar won the seat by nearly 41,000 votes.

Falta also falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency represented by Abhishek Banerjee.
