The announcement came during the visit of Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh to the dairy processing unit of the Mizoram Multi-Commodity Producers Cooperative Union at Thuampui in Aizawl district.

The Minister said the Centre wants to improve milk production, expand dairy infrastructure, and create sustainable income opportunities for livestock farmers in the state. He praised MULCO and local dairy cooperatives for steadily building the sector despite multiple challenges.

According to Singh, the achievements of dairy workers and cooperative societies show the growing potential of the dairy economy in Mizoram. He also assured continuous cooperation between the Central and Mizoram governments to ensure long-term development.

Centre Revises Funding Pattern for Dairy Projects

One of the most significant announcements involved the revision of the funding structure for dairy development schemes. The Centre increased its contribution from the earlier 75:25 ratio to a new 90:10 pattern.

The revised financial arrangement will reduce the fiscal burden on the Mizoram government. At the same time, it will accelerate dairy infrastructure projects in rural and urban areas.

Officials believe the new structure will encourage faster implementation of milk-processing facilities, procurement systems, and farmer welfare programmes.

Minister Highlights Low Milk Production in Mizoram

During the programme, Singh admitted that Mizoram still struggles with low milk production. Current production levels do not fully meet local demand. As a result, the state depends heavily on imported dairy products from outside regions.

The Minister urged officials, dairy cooperatives, and farmers to work with renewed commitment. He stressed that Mizoram should not lag behind neighbouring Northeastern states in dairy development.

He also underlined the importance of modern dairy practices, scientific cattle management, and improved farmer participation to transform the sector.

NDDB to Support Breed Improvement & Feed Supply

The Central Government will implement several projects in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board.

These initiatives include: Artificial Insemination programmes for better cattle breeds, Improved cattle feed distribution, Fodder development support and Livestock health and nutrition assistance.

Officials expect these programmes to increase milk yield and improve cattle health across Mizoram.

Speaking at the event, Meenesh Shah highlighted the need to strengthen dairy cooperatives and upgrade milk-processing infrastructure in the Northeast.

He said better infrastructure and scientific farming practices can significantly improve dairy productivity in the region.

MULCO Products to Reach Larger Markets

The Centre also announced plans to aggressively market dairy products manufactured by MULCO in Aizawl and nearby markets.

Products identified for expansion include: Paneer, Rasmalai, Cow ghee and Other processed dairy products

The initiative aims to create stronger local business opportunities and increase earnings for dairy farmers and cooperative societies.

According to officials, better market access will help local producers compete with outside brands while promoting indigenous dairy products.

New Dairy and Fisheries Products Launched

The programme witnessed the launch of several livestock and fisheries-related products and initiatives.

Newly introduced items included:

  • MULCO Cow Ghee
  • Baled silage
  • Type-II cattle feed
  • Deworming products
  • Mineral mixture supplements

Authorities also distributed Fisheries Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to beneficiaries. Awards were presented to outstanding fisheries startups and fisheries cooperatives during the event.

The programme reflected the government’s broader focus on both dairy and fisheries development in the Northeastern region.
