Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement while interacting with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Lankamura Border Outpost on the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s West district.

He said the project will establish a modern security grid capable of addressing emerging border challenges through the use of advanced technologies. According to Shah, India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047 requires a secure and stable national environment.

“Development and security must move together,” he indicated while outlining the government’s broader vision for national growth.

Advanced Technology to Drive the Smart Border Network

The proposed Smart Border Project will rely on a combination of technological solutions to improve surveillance and rapid response capabilities.

These include drones, modern cameras, intelligent monitoring systems and other advanced security tools designed to detect suspicious movements and prevent illegal activities along the border.

Officials believe such technologies will help security agencies monitor difficult terrain more effectively and reduce vulnerabilities along sensitive frontier regions.

Pilot Project to Begin Next Year

Shah said the Smart Border Project has entered the final stages of preparation.

While the overall initiative will be launched soon, the pilot phase is expected to begin next year at seven to eight selected locations across India where the Border Security Force (BSF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are deployed.

The government will evaluate the pilot programme before expanding the system to other vulnerable border stretches. Lessons learned during the trial phase will help refine the project before nationwide implementation.

The Home Minister emphasized that border security must function as a unified network rather than isolated security arrangements.

New-Age Threats Require New-Age Solutions

During his address, Shah highlighted the changing nature of border-related challenges.

He said India now faces multiple non-traditional threats, including narcotics trafficking, illegal infiltration, human trafficking, cattle smuggling, fake currency circulation and rising drug abuse among young people.

According to him, criminal groups are increasingly using sophisticated methods to exploit border vulnerabilities.

He also referred to incidents involving drones used for dropping arms, narcotics and other contraband across international borders.

The Home Minister noted that India’s borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan present different operational challenges and require tailored security strategies.

BSF Personnel Receive Praise for Their Commitment

Shah commended BSF personnel for their role in protecting the country’s borders under difficult circumstances.

He said the dedication, discipline and sacrifices made by border guards are deeply valued by citizens across India.

The Home Minister also assured personnel that the government remains committed to improving welfare measures for BSF members and their families.

Centre Reaffirms Stand Against Illegal Infiltration

The Home Minister reiterated that the government would not allow demographic changes caused by illegal infiltration in border states.

He specifically referred to Tripura, West Bengal and Bihar while discussing border management challenges.

According to Shah, the Centre is strengthening surveillance systems and plugging gaps in existing security arrangements to prevent unauthorized cross-border movement and criminal activities.

For Tripura, which shares a long and sensitive border with Bangladesh, the Smart Border Project is expected to become a significant component of future security infrastructure.
