Modern Civil Hospital: A New Model for Urban Public Healthcare

Tripura has added a major modern healthcare asset with the inauguration of the ₹20.37-crore Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said the paperless, technology-driven facility marks a new phase in the state’s efforts to modernize public healthcare and expand quality medical services.

Agartala: Tripura strengthened its public healthcare infrastructure on Sunday with the inauguration of the ₹20.37-crore Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital. The new 50-bed facility introduces paperless healthcare services and modern medical infrastructure, reflecting the state’s push to build a more efficient and patient-friendly health system.

Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha inaugurated the hospital and dedicated it to the people of Tripura. He described the project as an important milestone in the government’s ongoing mission to upgrade public healthcare across the state.

A New Model for Urban Public Healthcare

The Chief Minister said the newly inaugurated hospital will function as a pilot project for future healthcare facilities in Tripura. He added that the government aims to create hospitals that combine modern technology with accessible and affordable treatment.

According to Dr. Saha, government hospitals have undergone significant improvements in recent years. He recalled that many public health institutions earlier struggled with poor infrastructure and inadequate facilities. The government has since focused on improving buildings, equipment, and patient services.

He said the transformation remains a work in progress, but the state has already entered a new phase in healthcare delivery.

One of the hospital’s key features is its paperless operational system. The digital approach is expected to simplify patient registration, improve record management, and reduce administrative delays.

Dr. Saha said the government is building an integrated healthcare system where technology supports faster and more efficient medical services. He noted that quality healthcare should be available to every citizen, regardless of economic background.

The Chief Minister said the hospital has been designed with that objective and equipped with modern medical technologies.

Modern Facilities Under One Roof

The hospital offers a range of essential healthcare services for city residents.

It houses 50 oxygen-supported beds and includes an oxygen generation plant to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply during emergencies.

The facility also provides:

  • Minor surgical services
  • General surgical procedures
  • ENT outpatient services
  • General medicine OPD
  • Gynaecology services
  • Mother and child healthcare
  • Emergency ambulance services

An Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) has also been installed to ensure safe disposal and treatment of biomedical wastewater, making the hospital environmentally compliant.

Dr. Saha said these facilities will reduce the need for residents of Agartala to travel elsewhere for routine emergency and specialized care.

Expansion Planned Across Urban Tripura

The Chief Minister said the government intends to replicate the model if the pilot project achieves the expected results.

He announced plans to establish similar modern civil hospitals in Municipality and Nagar Panchayat areas across Tripura. The initiative aims to strengthen urban healthcare infrastructure while improving access to quality treatment closer to people’s homes.

He said the government is also working to ensure that hospitals across the state have adequate doctors, ambulance services, and other essential medical resources.

Integrated Healthcare Remains the Government’s Priority

Dr. Saha reiterated that Tripura is moving towards an integrated healthcare system that combines infrastructure, digital governance, and advanced medical services.

He said that if e-office systems can operate successfully in three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions, similar digital systems can also strengthen healthcare administration.

The Chief Minister noted that almost every major treatment facility is now available within the state. As a result, referrals to hospitals outside Tripura have declined by 83 percent.

He said the government is also expanding specialised healthcare services. Seven kidney transplants have already been performed successfully in Tripura, while two more procedures are scheduled soon.

The state has also begun planning for heart and liver transplant programmes, signalling the next phase of healthcare advancement.

Investment Targets Better Public Health

The ₹20.37-crore investment in the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital reflects the government’s broader strategy to modernize healthcare infrastructure while expanding digital and specialised medical services.

By combining paperless administration, emergency care, surgical facilities, oxygen-supported beds, and environmental safeguards under one roof, the hospital represents a new benchmark for urban public healthcare in Tripura.

If the pilot succeeds, similar facilities are expected to transform healthcare delivery across urban local bodies, making modern, technology-enabled treatment more accessible to thousands of residents throughout the state.
