Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has set its sights on securing a spot among the top 10 government medical colleges in the country, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said on Monday.
The Chief Minister announced while inaugurating a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) at the Super Speciality Block of AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala.
The two facilities have come up with an investment of Rs 13.50 crore. The new ICU has 18 beds, including nine for male patients and nine for female patients.
New Facilities to Strengthen Critical Care
Dr. Saha said the newly introduced units would improve the delivery of advanced medical care at the hospital.
The facilities will help doctors provide faster and continuous treatment to patients requiring specialised care. The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of modern infrastructure in improving patient safety.
The government is focusing on the modernisation of major referral hospitals across Tripura. The objective is to expand advanced treatment options within the state and reduce the need for patients to travel elsewhere for specialised healthcare.
Dr. Saha said the number of patients referred outside Tripura has already declined significantly. The government now wants to bring such referrals down to zero.
Focus on Training and Digital Services
The Chief Minister said infrastructure expansion must go hand in hand with skilled manpower.
Doctors and healthcare workers are therefore receiving advanced training in phases. The training aims to ensure that medical personnel can operate and manage modern healthcare units efficiently.
The government is also introducing digital services across hospitals in the state. The move is intended to strengthen hospital services alongside the expansion of medical infrastructure.
Super-Speciality Network Expanding
Tripura currently has nine operational super-speciality blocks, according to the Chief Minister.
The state is also expanding specialised healthcare infrastructure at GBP Hospital. A super-speciality block dedicated to mothers and children is under construction at the hospital at a cost of Rs 203 crore.
An eye hospital is also being developed to further expand access to specialised treatment.
Dr. Saha said the government was simultaneously working towards establishing a medical university in Tripura.
He also pointed out that Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and Dental Colleges are already functioning in the state.
CCTV Surveillance and Ambulance Corridor
Responding to questions from journalists, the Chief Minister outlined additional measures planned for GBP Hospital.
The hospital will be brought under round-the-clock surveillance using modern CCTV cameras. A dedicated unit will monitor the surveillance system.
The government also plans to create a special corridor for ambulances carrying patients. The facility will help ambulances enter the hospital more quickly.
The Chief Minister further said steps would be taken to ensure the continuous availability of essential generic medicines.

Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, MLA and Rogi Kalyan Samiti Chairperson Minarani Sarkar, AGMC Principal Dr. Tapan Majumder and GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami attended the inauguration programme.
