The Tripura Olympic Association plans to develop a multi-storey Olympic Bhavan with a proposed sports museum on around three kanis of government land near Motor Stand in Agartala, following a handover by the West Tripura district administration on Saturday, with the association preparing to finalise the project plan in consultation with the state government.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Tripura government has handed over around three kanis of land near Motor Stand and Pagla Debata Temple in Agartala to the Tripura Olympic Association.

  • The association plans a multi-storey Olympic Bhavan with a proposed museum and other facilities.

  • The association hopes to hold the foundation ceremony after Durga Puja, but construction plans and timelines remain undecided.

The Tripura Olympic Association has received government land near Motor Stand in Agartala to build its proposed Olympic Bhavan, marking a significant step towards establishing a dedicated facility for the state’s sporting body.

Association officials and government representatives visited the site on Saturday and completed the land handover process. The plot lies beside the traditional Pagla Debata Temple, in a prominent area of the city.

The association plans to develop a multi-storey building that may include a sports museum and other facilities. However, officials have yet to finalise the building’s design, construction schedule and overall project plan.

Sujit Roy, an official of the Tripura Olympic Association, described the land handover as a historic moment for the state’s sporting community. He thanked Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Sports Minister Tinku Roy and the state government for supporting the initiative.

District Administration Completes Land Handover

According to Roy, government officials began measuring the land on Friday and completed the handover process on Saturday.

Representatives of the West Tripura district administration attended the programme, along with revenue officials and other administrative personnel. Police representatives were also present during the site visit.

Officials cleaned the plot and carried out work to mark its boundaries. These activities followed the administration’s decision to provide the government land for the association’s proposed building.

Roy said the association was delighted to receive the plot, which would give it a dedicated space to develop its institutional infrastructure.

He described the location near Motor Stand and Pagla Debata Temple as a prominent part of Agartala. The association now intends to explore how it can use the available space to create a suitable building.

Multi-Storey Olympic Bhavan and Museum Proposed

The association intends to construct a multi-storey Olympic Bhavan on the land. Roy said the initial plan also envisages a museum and other facilities to support the association’s activities.

However, the association has not finalised the project’s scope or architectural design. Its leadership will discuss the available options before preparing a detailed proposal.

Roy said the association’s chairman, Ratan Saha, and Padma Shri awardee Dr Dipa Karmakar would join other members in developing the plan.

The association will then consult Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Sports Minister Tinku Roy and other government officials to determine how best to implement the project.

Roy said the association wanted to make the best possible use of the site and explore ways to develop the area into a suitable facility for Tripura’s sporting community.

Foundation Ceremony May Follow Durga Puja

The association hopes to organise a puja at the site and lay the foundation stone for the proposed building soon. Roy indicated that the ceremony could take place after Durga Puja.

However, the association has not announced a confirmed date for the foundation ceremony or the start of construction.

Roy stressed that the organisation had only just received the land. Its leadership must first prepare a proper plan and discuss the proposal with the state government before deciding the next steps.

He said the association would try to move the project forward as quickly as possible after completing these consultations.

Ratan Saha’s Support Acknowledged

Roy expressed particular gratitude to Ratan Saha, a prominent industrialist who chairs the association’s advisory board.

He credited Saha with providing consistent support during the reorganisation of the Tripura Olympic Association and efforts to secure land for the proposed Olympic Bhavan.

Roy said Saha’s assistance had helped the association navigate the process and advance its plans. He thanked him for standing by the organisation during its efforts to strengthen its institutional base.

Roy also acknowledged the role of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Sports Minister Tinku Roy and the state government in facilitating the land allocation.

A Step Towards Strengthening Sports Infrastructure

The proposed Olympic Bhavan represents an effort to establish a dedicated facility for the Tripura Olympic Association. The planned museum could also provide space to preserve and showcase the state’s sporting heritage, subject to the final project design.

The land handover marks the beginning of the planning process rather than the start of construction. The association must still finalise its proposal and consult the relevant authorities.

Roy expressed optimism that the initiative would create new opportunities for the association and contribute to sports infrastructure development in Tripura.

The next phase will depend on the decisions taken by the association’s leadership and its discussions with the state government. The construction timeline and final facilities will become clearer after the association completes its planning.
