People in Amarpur, Dharmanagar, Gandachhara, Teliamura and other parts of Tripura marked Mahalaya, apart from rituals like Tarpan, with drawing competitions, cultural programmes, ‘Agamani’ cultural event and a procession, welcoming the beginning of Debipaksha and the countdown to Durga Puja.

Mahalaya marks the beginning of Devipaksha and signals the approach of Durga Puja. Across Tripura, cultural programmes and community activities added to the festive spirit on Saturday.

The celebrations combined traditional performances with opportunities for young people to showcase their talents. Organisers also used the occasion to strengthen community ties and encourage participation in local cultural activities.

Amarpur Welcomes Mahalaya at Dawn

In Amarpur, the cultural programme Sharad Surey Amarpur brought residents together early on Saturday.

Purobi, a cultural organisation based in Udaipur, Gomati district, organised the event with support from the Amarpur Press Club. The programme began at 5 am in front of the Amarpur Nagar Panchayat office.

The sounds of dhak drums, conch shells and Agamani songs filled the morning air. Local artists performed songs, dances and recitations, creating a festive atmosphere.

Amarpur Nagar Panchayat chairman Bikash Saha attended the programme alongside cultural personalities and other prominent residents.

Amarpur Press Club secretary Sanjay Saha and Purobi head Sankarshan Ghosh said the organisers wanted to spread the joy of Durga Puja and provide local artists with a platform to showcase their talent.

Dharmanagar Town Kalibari Hosts Agamani Festival

Dharmanagar Town Kalibari organised an Agamani festival and cultural programme to welcome Devipaksha.

Students from various schools and educational institutions participated in dance, music and other performances. Their presentations attracted the audience and added to the festive atmosphere at the temple premises.

Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty, prominent personality Kajal Das and several cultural figures attended the programme.

The event highlighted the cultural significance of Mahalaya and the enthusiasm surrounding Goddess Durga’s arrival. Student participation also made the celebration an opportunity to showcase local talent.

Gandachhara Club Marks Golden Jubilee

In Gandachhara, Vivekananda Club in Debnath Para, Narayanpur, marked Mahalaya with a colourful procession as it began its golden jubilee Durga Puja celebrations.

A decorated tableau accompanied the procession from the club premises through Gandachhara Sub-Divisional Hospital Chowmuhani and Narayanpur Town Hall before returning to the starting point. Organisers later distributed khichuri prasad among local residents.

Club secretary Aditya Sarkar, club member and Panchayat member Manju Rani Namo Biswas, and other members joined the procession.

Puja committee secretary Tarun Debnath said the club had organised Durga Puja every year since its establishment. The 50th-anniversary celebrations have an estimated budget of more than Rs 1.5 lakh.

The club has planned several social welfare activities during the five-day festivities. These include tree plantation, a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign, distribution of fruits and sweets among hospital patients, distribution of clothes, and serving annabhog and mahaprasad.

Debnath appealed to people from all communities to join the celebrations and uphold peace, harmony and communal amity.

Drawing Competition Encourages Young Artists in Teliamura

The Gaurangatilla Sarbojanin Durgotsab Puja Committee in Teliamura organised a drawing competition to encourage creativity among children and teenagers.

Participants enthusiastically painted scenes from nature, images of Goddess Durga and other subjects of their choice. Parents also gathered to support the young artists.

The committee has organised Durga Puja for nearly 60 years. It holds the annual Mahalaya competition to nurture artistic interests among children and strengthen social bonds in the locality.

Committee members said they would continue such social and cultural initiatives to encourage the younger generation.

Cultural Traditions Set the Tone for Durga Puja

The Mahalaya programmes across Teliamura, Amarpur, Dharmanagar and Gandachhara reflected the diverse ways local communities welcome the autumn festival.
