Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on October 21 directed Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Rao to coordinate with Delhi Police over alleged racial harassment of a young tribal man from the state by a content creator in the national capital.

A senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed the directive. The official said Saha had asked the state police chief to coordinate with Delhi Police regarding the alleged derogatory remarks against the tribal youth.

“Law will take its course of action,” the CMO said in a post on its X handle.

The incident, involving content creator Amir Shokeen, has triggered widespread controversy in Tripura. Political parties and indigenous organisations have condemned the alleged remarks and called for action against him.

TMP Organisations File Police Complaints

Two youth and student organisations affiliated with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) have filed separate police complaints in Agartala over the video.

The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) and the TIPRA Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) submitted their complaints at the NCC Police Station.

Both organisations sought legal action over the video, which allegedly targeted a young man from Tripura with racial remarks and offensive gestures.

The complaints have added to demands for action against the content creator as the controversy continues to draw attention across the state.

According to the TISF complaint, the video was allegedly uploaded on September 19. It purportedly shows Shokeen making racial comments and offensive gestures towards an indigenous youth from Tripura during an interaction in Delhi.

The complaint alleged that Shokeen repeatedly called the young man “Chinese”. It also accused him of distorting the name of Tripura into an obscene expression.

These allegations have fuelled concerns among political leaders and indigenous organisations over the treatment of people from the Northeast.

Content Creator Apologises After Social Media Backlash

In a development on Wednesday, Shokeen apologised after the video surfaced on social media and triggered widespread criticism.

In a Facebook post, he claimed that the video was scripted and that he knew the man featured in it. Shokeen said the young man had previously worked at a cafe owned by one of his friends in Ahmedabad.

He described the exchange as a humorous video in which both men were joking with each other. He also maintained that he had no intention of insulting or offending anyone through the video.

Shokeen’s explanation came amid mounting criticism and demands for action from political leaders and organisations in Tripura.

The allegations, police complaints and subsequent apology have placed the incident at the centre of a wider debate over racial remarks directed at people from the Northeast.

Political Leaders Condemn Alleged Racial Remarks

Several prominent political leaders in Tripura have condemned the reported incident and demanded action against Shokeen.

Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury criticised the alleged conduct. TMP founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, whose party is an ally of the ruling BJP, also condemned the incident.

Senior Congress MLA and former minister Birajit Sinha joined other political leaders in demanding action over the alleged remarks.

The responses from leaders across political parties have intensified pressure for appropriate action in the case. The controversy has also drawn attention to concerns about alleged racial discrimination against people from the Northeast.

Alleged Discrimination Against Northeast People in Focus

The incident has renewed public attention on allegations of racial discrimination against people from the Northeast in other parts of the country.

Political parties and organisations in Tripura have called for appropriate action over the reported remarks against the tribal youth. The police complaints filed by the TMP-affiliated organisations have also brought the matter to the attention of local law enforcement.

Meanwhile, Shokeen has maintained that the video was scripted and that he did not intend to insult anyone.

The controversy has prompted demands for accountability while raising broader concerns about the treatment of indigenous people from the Northeast. (With IANS Inputs)
