BJP offers three seats to Tipra Motha across Tripura as part of its electoral understanding.
The Tripura Pradesh BJP has announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, covering 45 of the civic body’s 51 wards. However, the announcement has brought a significant political development. Sitting Mayor Dipak Majumder will not seek re-election, although he will lead the party’s campaign in Agartala.
BJP state president Abhishek Debroy announced the candidate list during a late-night press conference at the party’s state headquarters on Tuesday. He also outlined the party’s candidate selection strategy, its approach to the mayoral post and its electoral understanding with Tipra Motha.
The remaining six candidates, including the nominee for Ward 12, will be announced on November 4.
BJP Decides Against Fielding Sitting Mayor Dipak Majumder
Majumder’s decision to stay out of the electoral contest emerged as the most notable aspect of the BJP’s candidate announcement.
Explaining the decision, Debroy said the party had decided against appointing sitting MLAs to leadership positions in urban local bodies. The policy covers Nagar Panchayats, Municipal Councils and Municipal Corporations.
He clarified that the decision followed the BJP’s national-level organisational policy. Therefore, Majumder would not contest the upcoming civic elections despite serving as Agartala’s mayor for the past five years.
However, his absence from the candidate list will not keep him away from the election campaign. Debroy said Majumder would lead the BJP’s campaign in Agartala.
The announcement leaves open the question of who will occupy the mayor’s office if the BJP retains control of the corporation. However, the state president declined to identify any prospective candidate.
Modi, Manik Saha and Biplab Deb Among BJP’s Campaign Faces
The BJP will fight the polls under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Dipak Majumder.
Debroy said the party would approach the elections with these senior leaders at the forefront of its campaign.
The decision to retain Majumder as a key campaign figure indicates that the BJP intends to use his five-year experience as mayor despite his withdrawal from the electoral race.
When asked whether the party had already selected a successor to Majumder, Debroy ruled out announcing a mayoral face before the elections.
He said the BJP would decide on the next mayor only after the results.
BJP Gives Preference to Grassroots Workers and Young Candidates
Debroy said the BJP had placed considerable emphasis on grassroots organisational workers while preparing its candidate list.
The selection process gave priority to pristha pramukhs, booth presidents and Shakti Kendra pramukhs. The party also sought to provide opportunities to younger candidates and people from different professional backgrounds.
Women between 20 and 40 years of age received particular consideration, according to the state president.
Doctors, advocates, retired teachers and engineers also found places in the candidate selection process. Debroy said the party had opened electoral opportunities to people representing almost every section of society.

A preliminary assessment of the announced list indicated that around eight to ten new faces had secured nominations. Their number could increase when the BJP releases the remaining names.
The party has yet to announce candidates for six AMC wards. Debroy confirmed that the remaining nominees would be declared on Wednesday.
BJP to Announce Other Civic Candidates Through Party Notices
Apart from the AMC list, the BJP will release its candidates for other municipalities and Nagar Panchayats across Tripura.
Debroy said the party would communicate those names through notices displayed on its organisational notice boards.
The state president also addressed questions about the exclusion of some candidates who had contested the previous elections.
He attributed the changes to several considerations, including revised reservation arrangements, age-related factors and internal organisational requirements.
According to Debroy, the BJP follows a multi-stage screening process before finalising candidates. The exercise involves consultations and scrutiny at different organisational levels, including the party’s central leadership.
This process, he said, determines the final composition of the candidate list.
BJP Candidates to File Nominations on November 4 and 5
The BJP has set November 4 and 5 for its candidates to submit nomination papers.
With the first list covering 45 AMC wards, the party is expected to complete its remaining candidate announcements on Wednesday.
The preliminary assessment suggests that the BJP has introduced several new faces while retaining its focus on organisational workers and candidates from different professional backgrounds.
BJP Offers Three Seats to Tipra Motha
Debroy also disclosed an important detail about the BJP’s electoral understanding with Tipra Motha.
Responding to questions about the seat-sharing arrangement, he said the BJP had decided to offer three seats to Tipra Motha across Tripura.
However, he did not disclose which wards or specific locations would be allocated to the regional party.
With 45 candidates announced and six names pending, the BJP has taken its first major step towards the Agartala civic election campaign.
