March 15, 2018: The new Chief Minister of the State, Biplab Kumar Deb today took oath in the Assembly as an MLA. The pro-tem Speaker Ratan Chakraborty administered the oath to the Chief Minister and other elected members of the House.

Meanwhile, BJP has bagged the Charilam by-poll which went on to polls on March 12. BJP candidate cum deputy Chief Minister, Jisnu Debbarman won from the Constituency. Preliminary reports mentioned that Jishnu Debbarma secured 25,530 votes. Total number of voters in the constituency stands at 29754.
Notably, CPIM opted out of the Poll contest much later than scheduled date for withdrawal of candidates. Citing large scale violence as the reason, CPIM stayed away from the poll, however, its candidate managed to get 1030 votes. Other contestants – Congress got 775 votes while INPT bagged 685 votes. Lone Independent candidate got 198 votes while 485 persons preferred ‘NOTA’ instead of any candidate.
By-Poll in Charilam (ST) seat was ordered after death of CPIM candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma. With today’s victory, BJP’s strength in the 60-seat State Assembly goes up to 36.
