April 24, 2018: An exhibition of a rare form of art – Quilling art – was held at Agartala City Centre. The three-day exhibition was organized with the initiative of Sambodhi Foundation of Arts and Culture started on April 21 and curtain was drawn on April 23.
“Quilling art is an atypical art form and not many are involved in this art-form in India. This is an art of curling small strips of paper into intricate coiled 3-D designs”, explained artist Ashim Kanti Pal. Basically a multi-talented retired persons, Ashim Kanti Pal started creating decorative designs by rolling small strips of paper into different shapes from 2010. Presently settled in Udaipur, artist Pal, earlier, held two exhibitions in Kolkata – Noti Binodini Art gallery and Academy of Fine Arts – on quilling arts.
Explaining more on quilling art, Ashim Kanti Pal said, quilling originated from France and Italy. Even though many claim that it started from Egypt, but nothing was found to substantiate the claim. “People in France and Italy used Quilling art in leisurely hours as a medium for time-pass, existence of such art form was found in North America also”, said artist Ashim Pal.
“Imagination and creativity coil together and produces amazing designs in most aesthetic manner without using any colour”, said director of Sambodhi Foundation Dr Mandakranta Roy. Talking about holding such an exhibition of rare breed of art, Dr Roy said, “Artist Ashim Pal is involved in such a mind-blowing art-form, and Sambodhi Foundation is proud to display his artistic endeavour to people of Agartala. I hope that many more young artists will take up quilling seriously and prove their talents – the exhibition aims at giving people an aesthetic and serene feeling as well as generate awareness about quilling art form”.
During the three-day exhibition, many budding artists visited and wondered at masterly coiled arts displayed in around 30-designs.
