May 09, 2018: Along with the whole nation, 157th birth Anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was observed in Tripura with his songs, poems and other compositions. Cultural programs were held across the state to mark the occasion. Both the government and non-government organizations celebrated the day with different cultural programs while the main event was organized by the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department at Rabindra Kanan and Rabindra Bhawan and other places this morning.
Today morning, the Chief Minister Biplab Deb paid floral tribute to the statue of Rabindranath Tagore at Rabindra Kanan. A three-day cultural programme organized by the State ICA department was inaugurated by the Deputy CM Jishnu Deb Varman today at Rabindra Bhawan. Among others, eminent singer Kamalbaran Chakraborty and noted writer Nanda kumar Debbarma also graced in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Jishnu Deb Varman remembered fond relationship between Rabindranath and Tripura. He said, cordial relation between Tagore and Tripura makes us proud. He focused upon significance of Tagore’s creation and importance of practicing the cultural tradition.
Meanwhile, in another programme organized by the School Education department, Minister Swantana Chakma said, a healthy society may emerge if children are groomed in Rabindra ambiance.
Artists from the state and other parts and students from different schools have participated in the day long programme. Tripura had a special place in many of Tagore’s songs and he wrote a number of novels with the then princely state’s history as the theme.
Some of his works relating to Tripura are ‘Bisharjan’, ‘Rajarshi’ and ‘Mukut’. Tagore had visited and stayed in the capital several times between 1899 and 1927. Born on this day, Vaisakha 25 (according to the Bengali calendar/May 7, 1861 according to English calendar), Tagore in 1913 became the first Asian Nobel laureate and the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature. He also holds the distinction of having authored the national anthems of two sovereign nations- India and Bangladesh and his rich, diverse and vast literary caliber is virtually unmatched in the world. He was also a painter and a composer par excellence.
