May 11, 2018: The State Pradesh Congress of Tripura today came out against State Government’s ‘eviction drive’ and staged a road blockade. Sources said, Congress activists led by PCC Chief Birajit Sinha and former Congress MLA Gopal Roy staged road blockade at Math Choumuhani area in Agartala today. After the hour-long blockade, Congress leaders addressed a press conference and condemned the Government’s move. Leaders also demanded immediate re-start social security schemes and start paying pensions to beneficiaries.
Earlier, the State Government served notice to over 150 families to vacate spaces they were occupying along the Haora River bank at Pratapgarh in Agartala. “Every year, vast areas of both sides of Haora River submerge during rainy season and henceforth, the Government decided to rejuvenate the River and asked the occupants to vacant Bank-side spaces within seven days”, sources said.
However, the occupants protested against the notice and met the local BJP MLA Ashish Saha demanding cancellation of the ‘notice’. Meanwhile, Congress – supporting the cause of occupants – staged road blockade today morning. Agitators demanded cancellation of the ‘eviction notice’ until alternative arrangements were made for the evicted families.
