May 12, 2018: Bangladesh is unhappy with the attitude of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee – her stance on Teesta River issue is unexpected. Speaking at a programme today in Agartala, MP of Awami League from Sarail-Ashuganj under Brahminbariya, Jiyaul Haque Mridar commented this. Haque arrived in Agartala in a two-day tour today.
Blasting against Mamata Banerjee, Haque alleged, “Mamata is not willing to share water of Teesta River with Bangladesh. Moreover, by constructing dam, she has diverted the water flow of the River. This has badly affected downstream country – Bangladesh”.
Importantly, with elections in Bangladesh is knocking at the door, all the opposition parties have made Teesta River water sharing a major issue. Awami League is also focusing on the issue and intensifying pitch against Mamata Banerjee to exert pressure.
Haque lamented that attitude and stance of the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was improper and never expected. “Her move to construct Dam on the Teesta River on Indian side has rendered Northern part of Bangladesh completely barren and affected livelihood of huge population”, Haque alleged. Highlighting plight of people affected, Haque urged, “We are requesting Mamata Banerjee to save the vast land of Bangladesh from becoming a barren land”. He detailed about the loss of livelihood of people due to construction of Dam and diversion of water flow of the River and expressed said, “We are demanding our justifiable share of Teesta water – hope that West Bengal CM will not deprive us”.
He hailed the Indian Prime Minister’s role in enhancing bi-lateral relationship between India and Bangladesh. He also remembered contribution and sacrifices of people of Tripura during Bangladesh Liberation War.
