May 18, 2018: Three members of a family died in Hezamara Block of Mohanpur subdivision in West Tripura District after their houses collapsed last night due to incessant rain. The incident took place at Gobindapara of Subalsingh Boiragimura under Kambukchera ADC village. Heavy rain also claimed another life at Belfang of the same ADC village. The Chief Minister announced Rs 5 lakh to kin of the deceased persons and Rs 1 lakh for reconstruction of damaged houses.
Torrential rain lashed at parts of the State including Agartala throwing life out of gear. Several areas in Agartala submerged in flood-like situation and normal life was affected.
Last night incessant rain caused landslide from Baramura Hills and the soil spilled over to the house of Saniram Debbarma in Gobindapara of Subalsigh Boiragimura. The house collapsed on the family of Saniram Debbarma (35 years), including his wife Amritbala Debbarma (30 years) and his son Abhi Debbarma (3 years).
In the same incident another son of Saniram Debbarma, Dipankar Debbarma (8 years) sustained serious injuries and he is being treated at GB Hospital at the moment.
In the morning the incident came to the attention of the neighbours. Thereafter the neighbours endeavoured to take out the dead bodies. In another incident another person namely Malindra Debbarma (50 years) died at Belfang of Kambukchera ADC village due to incessant rain.
Meanwhile the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, in a tweet announced that Rs. 5 lakh would be given to the kin of the deceased family and Rs. 1 lakh would be given for reconstruction of houses damaged in the flood.
The Chief Minister further tweeted: “Due to the heavy rain in Tripura, several areas of the state have been acutely affected. I am undertaking a visit to these areas along with senior administrative officials. Government of Tripura shall ensure all possible assistance to the victims at the earliest”.
On receiving the news of the incident the SDM of Mohanpur subdivision Prasun De rushed to the spot. Later on the education minister Ratanlal Nath, tribal welfare minister Mewar Kumar Jamatia, Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA and Sunil Debbarma, Chairman, Hezamara Block BAC visited the area and enquired about the incident from the people. Dr. Sandip N. Mahatme, DM, West District also visited the site. The sub-divisional administration of Mohanpur has already given Rs. 15,000 to the kin of each of the deceased families.
Earlier, the Chief Minister visited inundated areas of his constituency, Banamalipur on foot to observe the pathetic condition due to heavy water logging and flooding after a massive downpour today morning. “The city witnesses the same situation during every rainy season due to poor drainage system. To get rid of the water-logging problem, the state government already sanctioned Rs. 7 crore but nothing much can be done in this monsoon.
However, if everything falls in right place, the drainage system of city will improve to a large extent in the next monsoon,” the Chief Minister told media.
He also interacted with affected people of to take stock of the situation. He also directed the officials to ensure that the flood-relief materials are delivered at the earliest. He also assured that effective measures will be taken to improve area’s drainage system.
