Agartala, January 03, 2019: Honey bee is now declared as the ‘State Insect’. The decision was taken in a cabinet decision recently. Speaking to media, State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said, “Cabinet has given its nod in announcing honeybee as the ‘insect of State’. Beekeeping is a popular profession in the State. Beside, bees are available in abundance in Tripura forests”.
It may be noted, the BJP-led State Government announced ‘Queen’ variety of pineapple as the ‘State Fruit’.
In the wake global concern over dwindling bee population, State Government’s decision assumes significance, opined an Agriculture Officer on condition of anonymity. According to Minister Ratan Lal Nath, State produces around 80-100 quinntal honey every year – market value of honey produced is around Rs 40-50 lakhs.
Bees play a crucial role in pollination which is crucial in crop production. “Beekeeping can generate sustainable income and considering high demand for pure honey, people can earn considerably through beekeeping”, Nath said and added, with the help of Khadi Board, several households are earning handsome amount from beekeeping in the State.
In the wake of interests shown by several industrial units of other States, the State Government has prepared a plan to train people interested in beekeeping as well as Government will assist interested people with supply of essential equipment for beekeeping, Nath said.
