Glad to learn that I was the 1st Environment Minister to visit Keibul Kamjao National Park, tweeted the Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar. He has visited the NP on Jan 9.
Notably, Keibul Kamjao NP is located at Bishnupur district in Manipur. Keibul Kamjao National Park is the only floating park in the world which is an integral part of Loktak Lake. This park is famous for Sangai, also called dancing deer. He informed the number of Sangai has increased from 40 to 200 due to People’s participation, scientific conservation and management. Talking about livelihood of local people Javedhkar said that implementation of eco-tourism project in Keibul Lamjao National Park would upscale people’s participation and their livelihood. The Minister took a boat ride in Loktak Lake too.
News agencies report, the Minister has urged the Manipuri farmers to shun Jhum (shifting cultivation) as this practice has serious detrimental effects on environment.
The Minister is scheduled to reach Agartala on Jan 10 and visit Sepahijala Sanctuary. Apart from holding meetings with forest department officials, the Minister will pay courtesy visit to Tripura CM Manik Sarkar.
