Agartala, March 24, 2019: Sitting MP and CPIM candidate for West Parliamentary Constituency in Tripura Sankar Prasad Datta came under attacks at three different places in Tripura today while campaign for Lok Sabha Polls. While the CPIM leaders held BJP-backed goons responsible for series of attacks on Datta, BJP refuted the charge and alleged, CPIM along with Congress made a shadow alliance and creating troubles before polls.
Sankar Prasad Datta who was re-nominated by Leftist for West Parliamentary seat came under assault at Mohanpur in West Tripura District while travelling to Jirania in the same district today. “At Mohanpur, a group of BJP-backed miscreants vandalised the car in which Datta was travelling and Datta was narrowing escaped. All these happened in presence of Police”, CPIM Party sources said.
In a Facebook video post, CPIM State secretary Gautam Das alleged, tension gripped Jirania since Saturday night and BJP supporters put up road blockades at four places to prevent Datta from entering in the area. Sensing troubles, Police requested Datta to cancel trip to Jirania and accordingly, Datta agreed.
Later, Datta headed towards Bishramganj in Sepahijala District to address street corner meetings as part of his poll campaign. However, during a meeting at Jangalia, miscreants, once again, created troubles – from Jangalia, Sankar Datta went to Bishramganj where miscreants again confronted him. In a separate incident, one local CPIM leader of Gandhigram, near Agartala, had been thrashed allegedly by BJP activists and Police hospitalized the injured CPIM leader.
Condemning the attacks, CPIM State secretary Gautam Das alleged, there is no positive environment for conducting free and fair polls in the State. He lamented that even though EC had assured them on measures to ensure smooth polls, the ground realities did not change and remained hostile for Opposition party candidates.
Meanwhile, BJP State unit refuted the allegation that BJP activists launched attacks on Sankar Prasad Datta. In a counter allegation, BJP alleged, CPIM supporters led by Datta attacked BJP Karyakartars and three BJP workers were injured. BJP also accused CPIM and Congress of forming a secret understanding to create troubles and panic among the people prior to LS Polls. The saffron party also alleged, upon search, several iron rods and sharp cutting weapons were recovered from Sankar Datta’s car.
