Agartala, June 01, 2019: People of Tripura wake up to Saturday with gusty winds with heavy downpour. The fury of nature left a trail of destruction in various parts of Tripura today morning with six persons injured and more than 900 houses affected. Electric poles were uprooted causing severe disruption of power supply. Big trees were uprooted and fell on roads affecting traffic movement. Meanwhile, in Agartala, water level in Haora River is increasing – however, flowing below the danger level.
As many as 12 relief camps – 10 in West and two in Sepahijala district – were set up and 766 affected people took shelter till the last information came in. NDRF teams have been kept for handling any emergency situation.
The Chief Minister is in touch with the district administrations and closely monitoring the overall situation. Deb, while appealing the people to help administration in dealing the situation, laid emphasize on restoration of power services and water supply.
However, power supply could not be restored in many areas in Agartala while in rural areas the situation is worse. With power supply remained suspended for long time in the City area, water pumps – installed for flushing out excess rain water from drains – became non-functional causing water-logging in most parts of the City. On the face of natural calamity, inefficacy of Power department to quickly restore normal power supply, even in city areas sparked large scale dissent among the people.
“Time and again, Power supply department is failing to repair and restore transmission lines promptly. Incapability of the department in handling emergency situation is clearly visible – and the State Government must seriously pay attention in improving services of the Power supply department”, said a resident of Nandan Nagar in Agartala where electric supply remained suspended till 8pm since early morning.
Gusty wind, rains and thunder bolts since early morning of Saturday affected daily life of people and caused huge property damage – however, there is no report of any casualty so far.
