Agartala, September 16, 2019: Surprising it may appear, but youth wings of opposition CPI-M – DYFI and TYF – managed to hold a massive rally in Agartala today protesting against several policies of the BJP-IPFT Government.
The mammoth mobilisation of the supporters by the CPM –which was facing steady erosion of its base in the state for the last two years or so and was largely believed to have been in the dying out phase- stunned city people as locals witnessed hours long DYFI-TYF procession across the city thoroughfares under the blazing sun. Slogans shouting supporters marched through city road, threw traffic out of gear. Such a huge rally by CPI-M youth wings or for that matter by CPIM itself – even during heydays of CPIM – was never-seen.
Ostensibly, the Marxists succeeded to a great extent to infuse some blood in its grass root level political structure.
The DYFI and TYF rally in the capital was demanding employment for the youths and ‘restoration of democracy’ in the state.
They protest rally which began from Rabindra Bhawan and made its way to the Swami Vivekananda Ground demanded that the government roll back hikes in Hospital tariffs besides ensure employment for the youths.
“We demand the BJP government, which is running an authoritarian government, to restore the democratic ambience in the state. Democracy was marred by incidents of large-scale attacks on opposition supporters in the past 18 months. There is crisis in the state”, said DYFI state president Palash Bhowmik.
Condemning the ‘privatization’ drive, DYFI state secretary Nabarun Deb said, “The activities of BJP government marked a sharp contrast with the pre-poll promises made by BJP top brasses. Instead of taking welfare measures- hike in social pensions and MGNREGA wages etc., the BJP government imposed a cess on fuel and all recruitments have been kept in abeyance”. The DYFI leaders also threatened to launch further movement to protect the rights of people.
