An overcast sky and intermittent rains outside painted a gloomy ambience while a woman was yelling of severe labour pain lying in a Covid care center.
But, unlike others, she had none of her family members close to her, in fact, even her husband was not there to give her little bit of comfort – the Covid 19 erected an invincible barrier between her and her beloved ones. The woman was tested Covid19 positive, earlier.
However, she was not left alone in her agony. The on-duty doctors intervened immediately and made all arrangements for a safe delivery. Yelling of the mother stopped abruptly. Instead, feeble cry of the new born baby broke the silence. It happened at GBP hospital on Wednesday. Despite all the glooms surrounding every individual, safe arrival of the new born baby showered happiness and joy among the health personnel.
Sources said, the woman who was tested positive to Covid 19 few days back was shifted to Saheed Bhagat Singh Covid care centre. After knowing about her agonizing labour pain on Wednesday morning, a team of doctors shifted her to GBP hospital Agartala and got her operated. As per the latest reports, both the new mother and her child were safe and out of danger.
“A cesarean delivery was conducted at GBP hospital of a Covid 19 infected patient. It was a very crucial operation at this point of time. Our team has done a great job and proved that humanity stands above everything”, a doctor familiar with the development said.
A team of doctors led by Dr AM Debbarma that comprised Dr Ankita Bhattacharjee and Dr. Rupamay Das operated on the patient. Staff Nurses Sarita Devi and Shibani Bhattacharjee were also in the team.
“At a time when many hospitals were trying to officiate or control admission of the patients, GBP hospital had done what many of the other health institutions like ILS and TMC failed to do. The whole team of GBP hospital deserved a huge applause”, a key member of ATGDA said.
Meanwhile, for the doctors, it was a first time experience. “Clad in PPE kits and following all the necessary restrictions, the whole team operated for hours in the gynecology ward. For us the main job was to save the lives of both the mother and child. And, our only reward was that both of them were safe and out of danger after the operation”, a doctor said.
All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association (ATGDA) congratulated the team for the exemplary job and raised a demand for separate operation theatres for Covid 119 cases.
“A demand that ATGDA wants to convey is that the government must set up two Covid 19 dedicated operation theatres for patients like this. Otherwise, serious problems may emerge in treatment of general patients. This case is not the end. Some more cases may come and we need to be prepared for that”, an ATGDA member said.
