Two Tripura girls were gang-raped night long by six persons and later were left on the roadside at lower Assam’s Nilambazar area under Karimganj district late on Friday night.
Assam Police swung into action immediately and all the six accused persons were arrested within the 72 hours of the incident.
Both the girls, siblings in relation, hailed from a village under North Tripura. They were returning home from Silchar Medical College after visiting their cancer patient mother, police said.
According to the police sources, both the girls hired a four-wheeler to return home on Friday evening after visiting their ailing mother. There was another person except for the driver. Under the pretext of taking a shortcut road, the driver who is one of the accused took the girls to a deserted place at Nilambazar area. The girls were taken at an under-construction building where four other persons were staying. All six persons raped the helpless girls night long.
After gang-raping the girls night long, the accused persons snatched mobile phones, money and other valuables from the girls and left them at the roadside in the wee hours of Saturday.
The victims got a lift from a lorry driver and reached Patharkandi police station to lodge an FIR.
The police identified the place and took prompt action. Police also found evidence of rape at the place. One mason identified as Abdul Ahad had been nabbed on Saturday who used to work in the under-construction site and some evidence was also collected from the spot of occurrence.
Police superintendent Mayank Kumar rushed to the spot and ordered the police officials to expedite the process of investigation.
The remaining accused persons were arrested later one by one from separate hideouts. The other accused were identified as Samsul Uddin, Abu Bakkar, Amir Ali, Anowar Hossain and Suman Ali.
