In a tragic incident, a NorthEast Frontier Railway junior engineer and a trolley man were killed on spot after a Freight train ran over them at Teliamura’s Lakhaibazar area in Tripura on Sunday. Two more persons received serious injuries. Demand for a thorough inquiry as to how such an accident took place despite having minute-to-minute surveillance and route mapping system was raised.
According to local police, the deceased persons were identified as Akhil Yadav (50), the trolley man who hails from Uttar Pradesh and the other person was identified as Rajesh Sinha (55). Rajesh was discharging his duties as a junior engineer for the Jirania-Teliamura section of Northeast Frontier Railway. Uttam Sarkar and Rajesh Mondol who accompanied them were injured and undergoing treatment at Teliamura subdivision hospital.
Sources in the NF railway said, four officials led by the junior engineer left Teliamura railway station to repair a stretch that required some maintenance at around 3:30 pm in the afternoon. Soon they reached near the Teliamura tunnel in course of the inspection work, they were smashed by the goods-laden engine that was heading towards Dharmanagar from Jirania.
Before they could do anything, the train ran over them leaving the junior engineer and the trolly man who were sitting in the front row dead on spot. The injured officials who were sitting in the back row jumped out of the trolley and saved their life although both of them received severe injuries.
As per the last information, the mortal remains of both the railway officials were brought to Teliamura hospital’s morgue. After post mortem, the family members would be allowed to perform the last rights. On the other hand, owing to the incident, railway services were halted for a while in Teliamura Agartala route drawing ire from the commuters. Hundreds of commuters expressed their anguish over the unprecedented delay in their journey.
Sources also said, an internal inquiry into the matter would be initiated soon to find out the reason behind these tragic deaths.
