The Tripura Police had registered five criminal cases against 71 people for posting “provocative” and “fake posts” on social media over the alleged communal violence in Tripura in the wake of atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh during Durga Puja.

In a video message, the DIG (Southern Range) also said law and situation in the State is absolutely normal.

Appealing to people to stay away from spreading fake news and rumours, the police have also warned that strict action would be taken against those trying to “create hatred in the society”, the Tripura Police posted on its tweeter handle on Wednesday.

The tweet reads, “5 criminal cases have been registered against 71 persons who posted provocative posts on social media. Strict action shall be taken against those persons who are trying to create hatred in the society.”

Referring to two cases occurred at Sepahijala district, Tripura Police tweeted, “Sepahijala District Police reiterates that though an attempt was made to do mischief in Naraura Maktab/Masjid, prompt action by District Police thwarted the move at initial stage. A criminal case has been registered and investigation is in progress.”

In another tweet, Police said, “Sepahijala District police clarifies that no major incident had taken place in the district. At Boxanagar one Panjakhana was partially damaged which was immediately repaired by the local Hindu Community people.”

However, in view of the posting fake news, Police tweeted, “Tripura Police appeals to all not to indulge in posting fake pictures/rumor mongering. Tripura Police appeals to all not to like/re-tweet provocative posts since it amounts to rumor mongering. It is clarified again that law and order is absolutely normal in the state”.
