Armed with data, Law minister of Tripura Ratanlal Nath on Monday rejected Trinamool Congress’ claim that the latter had secured the second position in terms of vote sharing in the Urban Body polls which was held in November 25 and results were announced on November 28.

After counting was over on November 28, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Abhishek Banerjee claimed that TMC had got over 20 percent votes in the Urban Local Body Polls which implied the TMC is in the second position pushing behind the CPM to third position.

However, Ratanlal Nath contradicted and rejected the claim.

In support of his statement, Nath shared the records of the State Election Commission and said that the overall vote share for BJP, CPI-M and TMC were 59.01 percent, 18.13 percent and 16.39 percent respectively. This clearly show that the TMC is not in the second rank but CPM is.

“As per the official records, it was not TMC but CPI-M had secured the second position in the local body polls”, Nath told the media.

In Agartala Municipal Corporation, the vote share of BJP was 57.39 percent followed by CPI-M (18.13 percent) and TMC (20.14 percent).

He referred to a press conference held soon after announcement of the poll results and was addressed by Bengal based TMC leader Rajib Banerjee and said that the TMC leaders had given wrong information relating to its poll performance to misguide the people.

The Minister also contradicted TMC leaders’ claim that they got 20 percent votes in the state in just three months. Nath reminded that Trinamool had secured 26.4 percent votes in the West Tripura district during 1999 polls. He said that vote share of the TMC had shrunk during the last 22 years whereas the vote bank of BJP was increasing in all the polls gradually since the 2018 assembly polls.

Meanwhile, there were total 4,93,041 eligible voters in the 222 seats that went to polls on November 25 last.

Nath congratulated the government employees for favouring the BJP in large numbers. Out of 2386 EDVs, BJP secured 1271 votes followed by 500 TMC and 559 Left Front, he said.
