Contrary to the common notion that student life is the golden period of whole life, a 20-year old college student is passing through harsh and bitter realities of life.

Born in a poverty-stricken family, the irony of fate is threatening to jeopardize the life journey of Karun Babu Chakma, a student of Gandachhera College.

Karun hails from Jatra Dhan Para under remote Nakkachhara ADC village in Gandachhara. He lost his father around seven years ago – pushing him, his mother, and elder sister into stark poverty – yet, they tried to stay afloat.

He had no idea that he was yet to face the worst period. His elder sister, who was married off earlier, returned her parents home with two children after a failed marriage. Meantime, he lost his pillar of strength – his mother – around four months ago.

Helpless and hapless Karun babu Chakma, at present, is staring at a bleak future. Apart from his own expenses, Karun Babu has to take care of his elder sister and her children.

Lamenting at his luck, Karun Babu said, “I am determined to continue my studies even as I am not sure as to how. I am working at people’s houses to earn money, sometimes we spend nights on empty stomachs”.

Karun Babu alleged he is not receiving benefits of any Government scheme, so far.

“No matter whether it is the previous LF regime or the present Government, I have not been selected for Government houses – not even a toilet”, he alleged.

At present, he along with his elder sister and nephews is staying in a dilapidated Tong Ghar near Dumboor lake.

“My life is full of tragedies, deprivation and endless struggle – however, I feel sorry for my little nephews as I cannot even feed them properly”, he lamented.

“But I will continue my study, no matter come what”, he asserted in a voice full of confidence and conviction.
