Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha directed the concerned officials to complete the Bru Reang rehabilitation process on a Mission Mode.

As per the historic quadripartite agreement signed between the Government of Tripura, Government of Mizoram, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the representatives of Bru Reang refugees, the permanent settlement of Bru people in Tripura had started on April 13, 2021.

Dr. Saha held a meeting with the high officials at the civil secretariat to review the progress of the Bru Reang rehabilitation at designated areas in Tripura.

The Chief Minister asked the officials to take assistance from Bru leaders, local people and officers, if necessary, to complete ongoing process.

Principal Secretary of the Revenue department Puneet Agarwal apprised the Chief Minister that the deadline for completion of Bru rehabilitation process is August 31, 2022.

In that case, as per the direction of the central government, if any Bru family fails to enroll their names for the rehabilitation process by August 31, they would not get any government facility, he said in the meeting according to a government press release.

Agarwal said, 37,136 Bru people of 6959 families are there in the state and twelve different places have been identified for their rehabilitation.

As of now, he said, rehabilitation of 3145 families is underway and house construction for 1477 families already completed.

He also said, a list of 1,189 Bru families has already been received and they would be rehabilitated at the selected locations and for the remaining 2625 families, the Bru leaders have been asked to submit the list at the earliest while necessary steps have been taken by the administration.

The meeting also discussed the facilities which are being provided to the Bru families as per the agreement between the Government of Tripura and Mizoram, Centre and Bru Organization.

According to the Principal Secretary, basic facilities like drinking water, electricity, road and healthcare would be provided to he rehabilitation centres. He also informed the meeting that the Bru families are receiving financial assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer.

The Bru Reang Tribal families were sheltered in seven relief camps in North Tripura after they fled from Mizoram 24 years ago following an ethnic strife in the adjoining state.
