In order to complete the process of resettlement of Bru migrants in the state, the state government is working with a humanitarian approach. The state government wants the resettlement process of Bru migrants to be completed quickly. In this case, if any problem arises, it will be resolved through discussion.
Reviewing the situation, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said that Bru rehabilitation process has been accelerated only after the present government took over. As a result, a historic agreement was signed with the central government, Tripura government, Mizoram government and Bru representatives on January 16, 2020 to solve the permanent problem of resettlement. As a result of this agreement, the state government is working towards the speedy completion of the rehabilitation process.
In the meeting, Principal Secretary of Revenue Department Puneet Agarwal said that the central government has extended the deadline for the Bru rehabilitation process till February 28, 2023.
During this period, 6,302 Bru families are in the process of completing the resettlement process at 12 identified places. 4,171 Brus are already in the 10 identified places. The families have been rehabilitated. Remaining 2,131 families are being rehabilitated.
The Principal Secretary said that 2,326 houses have been constructed so far. Also, the rehabilitation sites have roads, electricity, drinking water, schools, Anganwadi centres, health sub-centres, ration shops etc and further infrastructure will be developed. Also, gas connection is being provided to Bru families under Ujjawala Yojana. Principal Secretary said, Bru rehabilitated families have been asked to form cooperative societies. The process of forming cooperative societies has already started.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma said in the review meeting that the state government is working sincerely to solve the long-standing problem of Bru rehabilitation. If any problem arises in Bru rehabilitation, initiative will be taken to solve it after discussing it with everyone.
Participating in the discussion Chief Secretary J.K Sinha said the work of Bru rehabilitation is progressing satisfactorily. Regular monitoring is being done at the state level to see if the construction of various infrastructures including roads, electricity, and drinking water are being done properly or not in rehabilitation areas.
In the review meeting, Minister of Tribal Welfare Rampada Jamatia, Minister of Social Welfare and Social Education Department Santana Chakma, Minister of Fisheries Department Prem Kumar Reang, MLA Pramod Reang, Chairman of TIPRA and Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, PCCF K.S Shetty along with Secretaries of Power, Education, Health Departments and representatives of Bru organization were present in the meeting and participated in the discussion.
