People of the Sonamura subdivision under Sepahijala in Tripura wake up to a Sunday marked with hectic political activities. With the announcement of the 2023 Tripura Assembly polls just a matter of time, political parties are scaling up activities to reach and woo the voters.
Ruling BJP’s Jana Vishwas Abhiyan, which was flagged off by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 5 from the Southern and Northern parts of the State, entered Sonamura sub-division on January 7 and top leaders of the BJP including Union MoS Pratima Bhowmik, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma addressed the crowd at different places in the sub-division.
CPIM, the main Opposition party in the State, won the Sonamura Assembly seat in the 2018 Assembly polls and is conducting an intense outreach programme in its own style to keep the seat in the 2023 Assembly polls.
Owing to the presence of a significant number of minority voters, Sonamura Assembly Constituency assumes importance. With CPIM toiling hard to retain the Seat, BJP is also determined to snatch a victory. Besides, Congress and TMC are also eyeing to woo the voters – overall, the political temperature in the Sonamura Constituency is soaring high.
Tripura Pradesh Congress, unlike the 2018 Assembly polls, appear to be much more rejuvenated and determined to pose serious political challenges before the ruling BJP. To bolster its political chances in the upcoming elections, Congress leaders in the Sonamura sub-division are conducting a door-to-door campaign.
Two separate groups of Congress activists under the leadership of Dhruba Lal Chowdhury and Jahir Choudhury took part in the door-to-door campaign in the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat areas today. Apart from interacting with the voters, Congress party supporters distributed leaflets that highlighted the ‘failures’ of the ruling BJP on multiple issues.
Congress hit the ground with a people outreach programme while BJP’s Jana Vishwas Rath was rolling through the Sonamura sub-division and adjoining areas. In the sub-division, other Opposition parties, CPM and TMC are also trying hard to garner maximum support. In the last election, the CPIM candidate won the Sonamura Assembly seat.
In the 2018 election, it was a CPIM versus BJP battle – in 2023, the scenario is different as TMC and Congress, apart from CPIM, are also actively trying to woo the voters. Newly emerged Tipra Motha may also become a force to reckon with in a couple of Assembly seats in the sub-division.
If no alliance is forged between the Congress and CPM, a multi-corner battle is on the card which will give BJP a distinct edge.
