The 162nd birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated in style across the State through different cultural programmes. A special event – ‘Kabi Pranam’ – was organized by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department (ICA) in Agartala on Tuesday to pay tribute to the life and works of the legendary poet, who is fondly known as Biswakabi.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma graced the occasion as the chief guest. He called Tagore a shining star in the arena of literature and culture whose creations have received global acclaim. Dev Varma emphasized the importance of practising Tagore’s works to benefit the present generation, stating that the more his works are practised, the more the current generation will be enriched.

In his address, Dev Varma also highlighted the close bond that existed between Tagore and Tripura. He recalled that the kings of Tripura had supported Tagore, and in turn, Tagore had stood by the state in different times. Dev Varma noted that Rabindranath Tagore was a great example of humanity, whose teachings and writings remain as relevant today as they were when he first penned them.

Mayor Dipak Majumder also paid a rich tribute to the legendary poet and stressed the need to culture works of Rabindranath Tagore more. Among others, secretary of the ICA Dr PK Chakraborty and Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala Arif Mohammad were present in the programme.

Later a seminar was organized in which Dr Sourish Debbarma discussed on ‘Royal family and Rabindranath’. Besides, a retired professor of Agartala Women’s College Dr Narayan Bhattacharjee spoke in the seminar on Rabindranath’s life as a poet. Joint director of the ICA Sanjib Chakma chaired the seminar.

The 162nd birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate and celebrated poet, was commemorated across Tripura through various cultural programs on Tuesday (May 9). 

The Information and Cultural Affairs Department (ICA) organized a special event titled ‘Kabi Pranam’ in Agartala on Tuesday to honor the life and works of the legendary poet, popularly known as ‘Biswakabi’.

Dev Varma stressed the importance of practicing Tagore’s works to benefit the present generation, stating that the more his works are studied and applied, the more enriched the current generation will become.

Dev Varma also emphasized the close relationship between Tagore and Tripura, recalling how the kings of Tripura had supported Tagore, and in turn, Tagore had stood by the state in different times. 

The former Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted Tagore’s teachings and writings, which remain relevant today and serve as an excellent example of humanity.

During the event, Mayor Dipak Majumder paid tribute to Tagore and emphasized the need to promote his works further. The secretary of the ICA, Dr. PK Chakraborty, and Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Arif Mohammad, were also present at the ceremony.

Later in the day, a seminar was organized where Dr. Sourish Debbarma discussed the relationship between the royal family of Tripura and Rabindranath Tagore. Retired professor of Agartala Women’s College, Dr. Narayan Bhattacharjee, spoke about Tagore’s life as a poet. Joint Director of the ICA, Sanjib Chakma, chaired the seminar.

The commemoration of Tagore’s birth anniversary was a fitting tribute to the celebrated poet and his contributions to Indian literature and culture. It was also an opportunity to highlight the importance of studying and practicing his works to enrich the current generation.
