In a bid to address the persistent issue of traffic congestion and ensure smooth traffic movement in Agartala, a high-level meeting was held on Tuesday (May 16).

The meeting, chaired by State’s Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and attended by AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, aimed to devise effective strategies to mitigate the growing traffic problem.

During the meeting, Minister Pranajit Singha Roy highlighted the alarming increase in the number of vehicles in Agartala, which has resulted in frequent traffic jams and raised concerns among city residents. He said, “In order to fully realize the vision of Agartala as a smart city, it is imperative to tackle the issue of traffic congestion head-on”.

Minister Singha Roy went on to explain that no new permits had been issued for the AMC areas in the past five years, except for vehicle exchanges. However, he acknowledged the need to support the livelihoods of drivers and revealed that approximately 16,000 permits were granted for auto rickshaws.

Manik Das, SP Traffic, focused on the implementation of the plans formulated during the meeting. He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough assessments of key locations in the city and executing the plans in collaboration with various departments, including the police.

Das outlined the upcoming initiatives, which included raising public awareness, conducting enforcement drives, and taking strict action against unlicensed street vendors.

“These measures are expected to contribute to the overall goal of reducing traffic congestion”, he commented.

Mayor Dipak Majumder assured that all necessary assistance and cooperation would be extended by the Agartala Municipal Corporation to alleviate the chaotic traffic conditions that Agartala residents face on a daily basis.

Representatives from trade organizations, traffic department officials, police officials, AMC Councilors, and other stakeholders took part in the meeting in finding a viable solution to the traffic congestion problem.

As Agartala endeavors to enhance its urban landscape and ensure a smoother flow of traffic, the outcomes of this meeting are eagerly awaited by city residents who yearn for a more efficient transportation system.
