In a determined effort to eradicate the growing problem of drug abuse across the state, the Tripura State Legal Services Authority (TSLA) officially unveiled a groundbreaking initiative titled as Project MUKTI.

The launch ceremony, held on Friday (May 19), was attended by esteemed figures including Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh of the High Court of Tripura, Justice T Amarnath Goud, the Executive Chairman of the Tripura State Legal Services Authority, and Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairman of the High Court Legal Services Committee.

Notable lawyers and officials from various departments, including the police administration, were also present at the event.

Highlighting the pressing need for such a project, Chief Justice Singh emphasized the alarming rise in drug trafficking and abuse among the state’s children, adolescents and youths, which has far-reaching implications affecting both public health and the economy.

He further underlined the frequency with which newspapers report drug seizures, particularly cannabis, almost on a daily basis. Curtailing this menace has become a top priority for both the state and society at large, the Chief Justice asserted.

Project MUKTI aims to serve society by creating widespread awareness among individuals who have fallen victim to drug consumption, as well as those impacted by family members with drug dependencies.

Chief Justice Singh proposed the establishment of more accessible and affordable de-addiction centers across the state, specifically catering to disadvantaged sections of society, to maximize rehabilitation efforts.

Justice Goud, in his address, drew attention to the state’s vulnerable position due to its geographical location, surrounded by our neighboring country. He called upon everyone to take a united stand against drugs with ‘Say No to drugs’ slogan. He highlighted the additional adverse consequences resulting from narcotic drug abuse, such as the spread of HIV.

Expressing concern over the current drug abuse situation in Tripura, Justice Lodh emphasized that despite regular seizures by the police, the drug trade continues to thrive. He called for the deployment of SPOs in identified areas to proactively prevent drug use and trafficking.

Justice Lodh further stated that Project MUKTI seeks to disseminate knowledge about legal provisions, policies, programs, and schemes related to narcotic drugs, while also raising awareness about the detrimental effects of drug abuse. He also stressed the significance of engaging Panchayats and local bodies in efforts to curb the illicit cultivation of ganja.

According to the participating dignitaries, the launch of Project MUKTI marks a significant step forward in Tripura’s battle against drug abuse. With a multifaceted approach encompassing awareness campaigns, accessible rehabilitation centers, and increased law enforcement efforts, the state is determined to combat this menace.

By fostering collaboration between legal authorities, public figures, and community organizations, Tripura aims to create a society free from the clutches of drug addiction, safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens, experts opined.
