Jyotsna Akhtar, a resilient 10th-grade student hailing from a minority family in Amjad Nagar under Belonia subdivision in South Tripura, has set an extraordinary precedent by courageously stopping her own child marriage.

Unfortunately, the south district where she resides has the ‘highest rate’ of child marriages in the state. Recognizing the urgency to tackle this issue, various initiatives have been undertaken by the administration and education department, one of which is the establishment of Balika Manch (Girls’ Forum) in schools.

Jyotsna Akhtar serves as the convener of Amjad Nagar Vidyalaya’s Balika Manch, and her inspiring journey has earned her the admiration of many.

Driven by her desire to pursue further education and stand on her own feet, Jyotsna defied her parents’ wishes and sought the support of Balika Manch and local authorities to stop her marriage. Her bold act has transformed her into a symbol of bravery, earning her the title of “Veerangana” (a female warrior).

Saluting her inspirational courage against Child Marriage, Shuklacharan Noatia, the Minister of the Cooperatives and Minority Welfare Department of the State Government visited Jyotsna Akhtar’s residence on May 21.

During the visit, Minister Shuklacharan Noatia addressed the community, highlighting the detrimental impact of child marriage and emphasizing the need to eradicate the child marriage practice.

Jyotsna Akhtar, standing alongside the minister, shared her own harrowing experiences, urging the community not to overlook this pressing issue.

The Minister also made a heartfelt request for an end to child marriages in the State, promising comprehensive government support for Jyotsna’s higher education.

Furthermore, he assured Jyotsna’s economically disadvantaged family of various forms of government assistance, reaffirming the government’s commitment to standing by them.

The Minister was accompanied by MLA Swapna Majumder, BJP State IT in-charge Chandan Debnath, BJP South District Committee General Secretary Dwipayan Chowdhury, and local leaders.

Following the minister’s assurances, the local community, including Jyotsna’s family, expressed their elation. The support and recognition from the government instilled hope and optimism among the residents of Amjad Nagar.

Jyotsna’s journey has not only empowered her but has also served as an inspiration to countless others, shedding light on the importance of education and the eradication of child marriages.

Jyotsna Akhtar made a heartfelt plea to the community, urging them to refrain from marrying anyone below the age of 18. Her passionate words resonated with all those present, leaving an indelible impression on their minds. Her call for change serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and empower the younger generation.

Her remarkable courage stands as a testament to the power of determination and resilience. By denying to be bounded by the chains of child marriage and instead, advocating for change, she has emerged as a symbol of empowerment. Her unwavering spirit serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path toward a brighter and more equitable society.
